Facebook allowed the \u201cstop the steal\u201d MAGA supporters to organize on their website because it made the company\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/viral\/facebook-whistleblower-caused-jan-6-riot-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/viral\/facebook-whistleblower-caused-jan-6-riot-misinformation\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">a significant amount of money<\/a>.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/surveillancecapitalism\/files\/2021\/11\/postcard-surveillance-webversion1-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/surveillancecapitalism\/files\/2021\/11\/postcard-surveillance-webversion1-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/surveillancecapitalism\/files\/2021\/11\/postcard-surveillance-webversion1-1024x543.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/surveillancecapitalism\/files\/2021\/11\/postcard-surveillance-webversion1-768x407.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/surveillancecapitalism\/files\/2021\/11\/postcard-surveillance-webversion1.jpg 1063w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/>This conveys the idea that surveillance is detrimental to society, particularly due to the fact it puts profit over democracy. Surveillance and the\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.com\/en_us\/insights\/big-data\/what-is-big-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.sas.com\/en_us\/insights\/big-data\/what-is-big-data.html\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">collection of big data<\/a>\u00a0has put our democracy under threat in a way that many did not foresee. After\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_United_States_Capitol_attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_United_States_Capitol_attack\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">January 6th<\/a>, \u00a0the demand for stricter regulations among\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Tech\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">big tech companies<\/a>\u00a0and their use of data has never been higher.\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/10\/22\/business\/january-6-insurrection-facebook-papers\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/10\/22\/business\/january-6-insurrection-facebook-papers\/index.html\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Facebook is currently under scrutiny<\/a> for their alleged role in the January 6th insurrection, and have single-handedly proven just how much power big tech has with the potential of destabilizing our democracy and altering our way of life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The negative implications of living in a surveillance society regarding democracy have been seen, particularly during the\u00a0January 6th insurrection.
