A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education (click here for text) highlights the importance of time in making learning stick. The author suggests the following techniques:
1. Assessments should be cumulative – “The more often the students have to retrieve, use, and reflect upon the course material, the more opportunities you are giving them to learn it deeply.”
2. Refer back to the syllabus often, and make connections between current concepts and previously covered material.
3. Space out assessments – “…give frequent, spaced opportunities for students to practice and demonstrate their learning.”
