The result of this one was completely overshadowed by the fact that hockey has a new player atop its all-time scoring list.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The big moment came in the second period when Alexander Ovechkin bagged a power play goal to score Washington\u2019s first and only goal of the game. The goal marked the Russian\u2019s 895<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> NHL goal, breaking Wayne Gretzky\u2019s record that held for over thirty years.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8085 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/INC-300x167.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/INC-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/INC-1024x569.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/INC-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/INC-800x445.png 800w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/INC.png 1087w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">About seven minutes into the period, Capitals\u2019 Tom Wilson, 12- year teammate of Ovechkin, crossed the puck to him, who whipped it into the back of the net past Russian international teammate Ilya Sorokin.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe ultimate goal-scorer\u2019s goal for the greatest of all time\u201d, said Capitals coach Spencer Carbery.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ovechkin skated to center ice and belly flopped as his teammates piled on top of him and \u201cOvi!\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">chants echoed throughout UBS Arena.\u00a0 Play was paused for a 15-minute ceremony to recognize the milestone.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Surpassing Gretzky is just the cherry on top of a historic campaign it has been for Ovechkin this season, however there was a point where it didn\u2019t look so promising. Just 18 games into the season, he suffered a broken fibula that kept him off the ice for over a month.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Upon his return, Ovi was not chasing records, records were chasing him. In January alone, he became just the second player in history to record 20 consecutive 20-goal seasons, after only Gordie Howe, and scored on a 179<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> different goalkeeper, the highest mark in history.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In February, he became the first player in NHL history to reach the 200-goal mark in three different decades (245 goals in the 2000s, 437 goals in the 2010s, 213 in the 2020s).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8084 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/usa-today-300x199.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/usa-today-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/usa-today-1024x681.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/usa-today-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2025\/04\/usa-today.png 1026w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Friday, he scored his 893rd and 894<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> goals in the 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin\u2019s first goal of the night marked his 40<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the season, extending his own record of 40-goal seasons to 14. The goal also made him just the second player in history to record a 40-goal season at age 39 or older.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to an unbelievable individual season for Ovi, the Washington Capitals finished atop the Eastern Conference and Presidents\u2019 Trophy runners-up.
