The elections saw the end to the 12 years of power for the the right wing National Party and the victory of the first women to be elected President. The new President-Elect Xiomara Castro campaigned on a platform that would tax the rich, possibly loosen ties with Taiwan, and a collection of reforms that would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americasquarterly.org\/article\/could-honduras-shift-left-a-look-at-xiomara-castro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tackle corruption and inequality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. She is the first woman elected to the Presidency of Honduras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For 12 years the Central American nation of about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/the-world-factbook\/countries\/honduras\/#people-and-society\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9.5 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has been governed by the conservative National Party. The National Party under outgoing President Juan Orlando Hern\u00e1ndez has been beset by scandal. Just earlier this year the President\u2019s brother, Juan Antonio \u201cTony\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/brother-of-honduras-president-sentenced-to-life-in-drug-trafficking-case-11617147486\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sentenced to life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in prison in the United States on multiple drug trafficking charges that also implicated President Juan Orlando Hern\u00e1ndez as being actively involved in turning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2021\/11\/15\/is-the-president-of-honduras-a-narco-trafficker\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Honduras into a major hub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the Cocaine trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The United States, especially under the Trump Administration, had for much of President Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s presidency, been supportive of his leadership. After the Honduras election in December 2017 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/dec\/22\/us-recognizes-re-election-of-honduras-president-despite-calls-for-a-new-vote\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">US State Department recognized Hern\u00e1ndez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as the winner despite allegations of fraud and concern expressed by the Organization of American States, and EU observers.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4292\" style=\"width: 312px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4292\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2021\/12\/CastroHonduras2-1024x485.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2021\/12\/CastroHonduras2-1024x485.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2021\/12\/CastroHonduras2-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2021\/12\/CastroHonduras2-768x364.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/stillmanexchange\/files\/2021\/12\/CastroHonduras2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>President-Elect Xiomara Castro meets with National Party Presidential candidate Nasry Asfura who conceded defeat on November 30th, 2021 <em>(Photo courtesy of @XiomaraCastroZ via Twitter)<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In sharp contrast to the Trump Administration, the current US State Department <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/the-election-in-honduras\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recognized Castro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as the winner, as did her main opponent, National Party candidate Nasry Asfura.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While some had been concerned by Castro\u2019s remarks support of \u201cdemocratic-socialism\u201d and opposition to \u201cneoliberalism\u201d in the days immediately after her election their have been signals by those close to the President-Elect that Castro&#8217;s will not be a Presidency of complete reversal and realignment, but rather a shift to a more equitable and fair government. Castro\u2019s stance on Taiwan before her election was one of possible reexamination, if not fully switching Honduran diplomatic recognition to China, but a close ally of Castro who will be part of her administration stated that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/top-ally-incoming-honduran-president-casts-doubt-initiating-china-ties-2021-12-02\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Castro does not plan to recognize China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
