Carles Puigdemont, founder of the separatist movement Together for Catalonia, faced a court hearing\u00a0 on October 4 following his arrest on September 23. He was arrested in Sardinia, Italy<\/a> due to a, \u201cwarrant seeking his return to Spain for trial over a failed independence bid he led four years ago.\u201d According to the New York Times<\/a>, the Spanish government charged Mr. Puigdemont with sedition for being the leader of Catalonia\u2019s attempt to become an independent state in 2017. Other members of the movement were arrested and sentenced to jail but were pardoned by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in June. After Catalonia failed to separate from Spain, Mr. Puigdemont moved to Brussels and later went to Sardinia \u00a0for a \u201cCatalan folklore festival\u201d, where he was arrested<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shortly after his arrest in September, an Italian court ordered that he be freed immediately<\/a>. The court also set a date to reassess the legality of the arrest. The Italian court argued that since Mr. Puigdemont is a member of the European Parliament, he should have the freedom to attend their meetings. However, his immunity as a member of the European Parliament was removed in March, a decision which was sustained by the European courts in July.<\/p>\n

Reuters reports that on October 4, the Sardinian court conducted their first hearing. They were tasked with deciding whether<\/a> \u201cSpanish charges justify handing over Mr. Puigdemont\u201d and \u201cwhether Spain\u2019s judiciary had suspended its longstanding arrest warrant before the former Catalan leader traveled to Sardinia\u201d. According to Reuters, the court decided to suspend Spain\u2019s entreaty<\/a> to extradite Mr. Puigdemont, where he would face sedition charges in Spanish courts. His lawyers are requesting that Mr. Puigdemont\u2019s immunity as a member of the European Parliament be recovered as well. Any legal proceedings on his immunity have not yet been revealed<\/a>. Mr. Puigdemont will return to Belgium but will then continue traveling across Europe to advocate his cause. Reuters reports<\/a> Mr. Puigdemont\u2019s commitment to continue fighting for Catalonia\u2019s independence. He stated<\/a>, “We will continue fighting. We will never give up and I will continue travelling around Europe”.<\/p>\n

Mr. Puigdemont\u2019s arrest and hearing has resulted in political stress<\/a> between Spanish politicians (especially those from the Spanish capital, Madrid) and politicians from the Catalonian capital of Barcelona. Their relationship has already been strained due to Catalonia\u2019s prior attempt to separate from Spain.<\/p>\n
