Interior and Stained Glass

The photographs of all the windows and interior appointments were taken by Marianela Guerrero, Pastoral Associate for Communications and Director of Religious Education for St. Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral and St. John’s Parish, Newark NJ.

Paul V. Flynn, in his 1908 work, Saint John’s Church, Newark, states that the colored glass windows in St. John’s were manufactured in Angers, France. He does not give the date, but we can surmise from their style that they were made not long after the final expansion of the body of the church by Father Moran in 1858.

The two windows closest to the sanctuary depict Our Blessed Lord as ruler of the universe, and the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven. These two windows follow a separate design pattern distinct from the others. In these two windows, the central figure is framed by a series of rondels that alternate between grisaille portrayals of various events of the lives of Our Lord and His Blessed Mother and gold-toned symbols appropriate to the earthly life of the figure depicted.
