It was only a matter of time before those two interests cultivated into a successful career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t have a stoplight and my graduating class had 80 people in it,\u201d Ryan said regarding her hometown. \u201cMy next-door neighbors were cows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan, who currently works as a sports reporter for the Chicago Tribune, said despite growing up in Ohio, rooted for Notre Dame rather than her home state Ohio Buckeyes every Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3919 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/ND_USF_00045-1280x720-1-373x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/ND_USF_00045-1280x720-1-373x210.jpg 373w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/ND_USF_00045-1280x720-1-889x500.jpg 889w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/ND_USF_00045-1280x720-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/ND_USF_00045-1280x720-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family was an Irish Catholic family, and we were really into watching sports\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s love for the Fighting Irish eventually led to her attending Saint Mary\u2019s College after high school\u00ad\u00ad\u2014a small, women\u2019s liberal arts college in Notre Dame, Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan said many of Saint Mary\u2019s organizations were affiliated with the University of Notre Dame, including their student-run newspaper: The Observer. And since Saint Mary\u2019s did not offer journalism as a major, Ryan said she got most of her journalistic experience in college reporting for The Observer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a journalism class at Saint Mary\u2019s, I think it was the only one. And I took a couple at Notre Dame too\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan also said it was around this time, when she was covering Notre Dame\u2019s football program for The Observer, when she realized she wanted to pursue a career in sports journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see all these big-time reporters covering the team and watch them and say, \u2018wow, this is interesting.\u2019 It was a good way to break into the industry\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan became the managing editor of The Observer her senior year and with the help of one of her professors, got an internship at The South-Bend Tribune, the daily newspaper in South Bend, Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>After college, Ryan got a two-year residency and an internship at The Philadelphia Inquirer. Upon her arrival, she was shell-shocked to say the least.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3920 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/200604142025-philadelphia-inquirer-exterior-super-tease-373x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/200604142025-philadelphia-inquirer-exterior-super-tease-373x210.jpg 373w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/200604142025-philadelphia-inquirer-exterior-super-tease-889x500.jpg 889w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/200604142025-philadelphia-inquirer-exterior-super-tease-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/200604142025-philadelphia-inquirer-exterior-super-tease.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had never lived in a big city; I was surprised I even knew how to get around\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>The internship largely consisted of covering high school sports, and Ryan said she knew nearly every high school mascot in the greater Philadelphia area by the end of the two years.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan also said interning at The Inquirer was a great experience because of their hardnose reputation, which helped her understand the industry quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhiladelphia has this reputation that they don\u2019t take it easy on you,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cYou got to earn your stripes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan was hired by The Inquirer following her internship and worked as a beat writer covering the Philadelphia Eagles and the Villanova Wildcats\u2019 basketball programs for seven years.<\/p>\n<p>As of today, Ryan works for The Chicago Tribune mainly covering college athletics, something she said is her favorite part of the job.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TeamTribune?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TeamTribune<\/a> the only people at Bankers Life not wearing maroon and gold scarves or orange and blue gear. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Illini?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Illini<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Loyola?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Loyola<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hdvhVEao4U\">pic.twitter.com\/hdvhVEao4U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Shannon Ryan (@sryantribune) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sryantribune\/status\/1373664758881210375?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more of a schedule to it,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cYou get to tell people\u2019s stories for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan said one of her favorite experiences was covering the Loyola-Chicago men\u2019s basketball team in 2018 when they advanced to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in its program\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was excited, no one expected it and of course it\u2019s easier to cover a winning team\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3923 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/gty_937520884_98698234-350x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/gty_937520884_98698234-350x210.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/gty_937520884_98698234-833x500.jpg 833w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/gty_937520884_98698234-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/05\/gty_937520884_98698234.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ryan said she was lucky her career in sports journalism worked out because otherwise, she would not have known what to do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I forgot to develop any other skills,\u201d Ryan said sarcastically. \u201cMaybe teaching since my mom was a social worker or something in one of those fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This past year, like every other facet of the world, journalism was severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Ryan said during the pandemic, she was \u201cworking harder than ever,\u201d but found that her stories&#8217; subjects were more receptive to interviews than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince people were stuck at home, coaches were happy to answer the phone\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan also said she expects some of the changes made during the pandemic to remain intact, even when restrictions are lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do feel like Zoom is going to be used to limit in-person interaction or locker room interaction\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan also spoke on the many struggles women face within the sports media industry\u2014from the lack of women&#8217;s sports coverage to the unequal amount of opportunities female reporters get compared to their male counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s still times where I go to cover things and I\u2019m the only woman\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Illini?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Illini<\/a> women\u2019s team before the game. But Ryan said she has noticed coaches and players are more accustomed to seeing women reporters in the locker room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not as strange as it used to be\u201d Ryan said. \u201cIt has become more normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan said in the early stages of her career, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashleyfoxspeaker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashley Fox<\/a> of The Inquirer and ESPN and <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/author\/dana-oneil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dana O\u2019Neil<\/a> of The Philadelphia Daily News and The Athletic were two of her biggest mentors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were eager to help me and give me pointers. I could follow their lead\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan ended by saying the two most important things for a aspiring young journalists would be to build a rapport with experienced people in the industry and attack obstacles head-on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind people in the business who you can relate too,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cI think it is important for all of us to challenge ourselves no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While rural Creston, Ohio did not have much to offer growing up, Shannon Ryan said she always had two passions: writing and sports.
