{"id":3634,"date":"2021-04-26T09:44:04","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T13:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/?p=3634"},"modified":"2021-04-26T09:44:04","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T13:44:04","slug":"european-super-league-how-the-soccer-world-exploded-in-72-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/2021\/04\/26\/european-super-league-how-the-soccer-world-exploded-in-72-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"European Super League: How the Soccer World Exploded in 72 Hours\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The European Super League<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, introduced Sunday night,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sees\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some of Europe\u2019s top soccer teams signing up to create a breakaway league that protects 15 teams from relegation\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and will follow an American style\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of competition with a regular season and a playoff round.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Currently there are 12 founding teams:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AC Milan, Arsenal\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FC<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Atl\u00e9tico de Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC\u00a0Internazionale\u00a0Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but they are set to be joined by three more founding clubs to make 15.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although the soccer world was quickly taken back by this proposal, it came as a surprise to many that two of the world\u2019s biggest clubs were not a part of that list.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0French side Paris Saint-Germain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0did not receive an invitation to join the league<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">last year\u2019s UEFA Champions league winners Bayern Munich<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0opted not to take part in the league. The reason Bayern Munich, like the rest of the clubs in the German top division Bundesliga<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, are all owned with a \u201850+1\u2019 rule<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">state<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that a club\u2019s fans will always hold\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the majority of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the club\u2019s voting rights.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This rule\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">essentially prohibits<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0private investors from taking over a German football club.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If a soccer club in Germany were to become privately owned, they would not be allowed to play in the German\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">top<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The Bundesliga was thinking ahead, as the importance of the fanbase really showed its strength when the vote came to join the Super League or not.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Super League<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0will consist of 20 clubs with a qualifying mechanism\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for five teams to qualify based on achievements in the prior season, according to the league\u2019s website.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Furthermore, there are plans for a corresponding women\u2019s league.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With a planned start time of the 2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">02<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3-24 season,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">there is a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">$6 billion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fund backing the project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0headlined by JP Morgan Chase<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with each club expecting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more than<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0$300 million a year\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during their participation. That morning,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chelsea played host to Brighton Hove &amp; Albion at Stamford Bridge. During and after the game<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Manchester City was the first of the twelve clubs to announce that they were backing out of the plans for the European Super League.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Rumors then started to go around that Chelsea was on the verge of being the second team to drop out.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Later that afternoon it was confirmed that Manchester City and Chelsea\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">were the first two teams to officially drop out of the Super League.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While this was happening, players around the world are speaking out in protest of the Super League, with the entire Liverpool squad posting the same image on social media, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson calling an emergency meeting with all other team captains across the Premier League, and it was the players\u2019 mission to ensure the fans that they were on their side.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">UEFA and FIFA were also not happy with the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">proposal of the Super League.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">As\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the two biggest administrative bodies in world soccer, UEFA and FIFA came together and threatened to ban all Super League clubs from playing in the UEFA Champions Leagu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In addition, FIFA and UEFA\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">threatened<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that they will be banning all Super League players<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0from playing in the upcoming Euros that summer, as well as the next World Cup.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Then, later that night\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the English representation for the European Super Lea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">gue fell apart, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur becoming the next two teams to drop out. Shortly after, Manchester United Chief Execu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">tive\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ed Woodward announced his resignation from the club, with Manchester United announcing their withdrawal from the Super League afterwards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With Liverpool instantly responding by being the last English club to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">state<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0their departure,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he Super League lost half of the teams<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0within\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">48 hours<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of the first\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">reveal.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The nightmare day was not over for the Super League, as Italy saw its first club resign in FC\u00a0Internazionale\u00a0Milano.
