As a freshman, Ewing won one of his four Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards, took home the Big East Rookie of the Year award and was named to the All-Big East second team.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3064 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/5b3681c20d195.image_-183x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/5b3681c20d195.image_-183x210.jpg 183w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/5b3681c20d195.image_-436x500.jpg 436w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/5b3681c20d195.image_-768x881.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/5b3681c20d195.image_.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ewing helped the Hoyas win their second Big East tournament title in school history and secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. If we fast forward to 2021, things look awfully similar within Georgetown&#8217;s men&#8217;s basketball program.<\/p>\n<p>Ewing returned to his alma mater on April 3, 2017 when he was hired as head coach for the Hoyas. During his first season, Georgetown finished with a 15-15 record (5-13 in the Big East) and lost to the ninth-seeded St. John&#8217;s Red Storm in the first round of the Big East tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The following season, now with highly-touted recruits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/matthew-mcclung-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mac McClung<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/james-akinjo-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Akinjo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/josh-leblanc-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josh LeBlanc<\/a>, the Hoyas won five more games than the season prior (19-14). But Ewing and company still lost in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament and in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3065 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/Mackinjo-315x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/Mackinjo-315x210.jpg 315w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/Mackinjo-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/Mackinjo-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/Mackinjo.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ewing&#8217;s third season took a turn for the worst when it was reported that Akinjo and LeBlanc would no longer be members of the team after the players faced <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2865192-multiple-georgetown-players-accused-of-sexual-harassment-assault-burglary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegations<\/a> of sexual harassment, assault and burglary.<\/p>\n<p>Georgetown won six straight games following the departures of Akinjo and LeBlanc, but the team finished the season on a seven-game losing streak including another first-round exit in the Big East tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The 2020-21 season started as any other season for the Ewing-led Hoyas, as Georgetown opened their in-conference schedule 1-5 and had six of their games postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the Hoyas finished their regular season with quality wins against the Creighton Bluejays and the Seton Hall Pirates. But entering the Big East tournament as the eighth-seed for the third time in four years, nobody projected Georgetown to bust any brackets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3066 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/i-373x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/i-373x210.jpg 373w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/i-889x500.jpg 889w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/i-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportsreporting\/files\/2021\/03\/i.jpg 1296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Hoyas breezed through the ninth-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles in the first round of the tournament, marking Ewing&#8217;s first Big East tournament win and a matchup with the top-seeded Villanova Wildcats in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>Despite not having their star point guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/collin-gillespie-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Collin Gillespie<\/a>, Nova had the co-Big East Player of the Year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/jeremiah-robinson-earl-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeremiah Robinson-Earl<\/a> and standout guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/justin-moore-3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justin Moore<\/a> in tow.<\/p>\n<p>But behind an 18-point, 5-assist performance from freshman guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/dante-harris-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dante Harris<\/a>, the Hoyas escaped with a 72-71 victory over the Wildcats.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">W&#39;s in the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BETourney?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BETourney<\/a> just feel that much better. \ud83c\udf4e\ud83c\udfc0\ud83c\udfa5<\/p>\n<p>Postgame clips provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MedStarGUH?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@medstarGUH<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HoyaSaxa?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HoyaSaxa<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LetsGoHoyas?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LetsGoHoyas<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ONKQr8emTV\">pic.twitter.com\/ONKQr8emTV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Georgetown Hoops (@GeorgetownHoops) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeorgetownHoops\/status\/1370157980663099397?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 11, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Next up was the fifth-seeded Seton Hall Pirates, and the Hoyas held co-Big East Player of the Year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/sandro-mamukelashvili-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sandro Mamukelashvili<\/a> to eight points on 3\/16 shooting en route to a 66-58 victory in the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>In the championship game, the Hoyas faced the second-seeded Creighton Bluejays. But about two weeks prior to the big game, Creighton&#8217;s head coach Greg McDermott was under fire after he made racially insensitive <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2934210-creightons-greg-mcdermott-apologizes-for-plantation-comment-after-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comments<\/a> to his team following a 77-69 loss to Xavier. McDermott was suspended for Creighton&#8217;s regular season finale against the Butler Bulldogs, a game Creighton won 93-73.<\/p>\n<p>But that is why this Big East championship game meant more than securing an NCAA tournament bid for Ewing and the Hoyas.<\/p>\n<p>Ewing, a Black man, who was vocal about racial equality during the turbulent summer of 2020, who was &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/31046252\/patrick-ewing-annoyed-being-accosted-msg-security-jokes-everybody-building-know-hell-am\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accosted<\/a>&#8221; by Madison Square Garden security despite being one of the most recognizable New York sports figures, and someone who played for one of the most influential Black coaches of all-time at Georgetown\u2014could not lose to McDermott and his bigoted comments.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Black Lives Matter<br \/>They have always mattered. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HoyaSaxa?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HoyaSaxa<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UadlkQl0sl\">pic.twitter.com\/UadlkQl0sl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Patrick Ewing (@CoachEwing33) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoachEwing33\/status\/1288224728164040706?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 28, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Hoyas dismantled the Bluejays in the tournament championship, winning 73-48 and limiting one of the most efficient teams in the country to just 31% shooting from the field.
