Real life, real time conversations with leading professionals and opinion leaders. That’s our goal in our Sports Media Speaker Series; an experience for Seton Hall students and members of the community that will engage and inform on the issues, trends and questions of the moment and \u2013 more importantly \u2013 tomorrow.\u00a0 Recent appearances by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith played to overflow crowds at Bethany Hall, with each including a vibrant Q and A session, parts of which went viral.<\/div>\n

As part of President Nyre’s Investiture Week, Hall of Fame broadcaster and sports journalist Bob Costas spent several hours with a large audience discussing matters ranging from his own career, to the major questions facing the sports industry. In the heart of the uncertain pandemic times, our panel discussion “The Year of Playing Dangerously” took students and viewers inside the NBA bubble, the World Series COVID questions and through the many evolving ethical challenges. Ken Rosenthal (Fox\/The Athletic<\/em>), Dana O’Neal (The Athletic<\/em>), Ramona Shelburne (ESPN<\/em>) and Aditi Kinkhabwala (NFL Network<\/em>) shared their experiences and newly-acquired knowledge of sports journalism in a challenging time.<\/div>\n

COVID, College Hoops and the College Sports Model<\/strong><\/p>\n

College basketball has become bigger than ever, generating billions for the NCAA, conferences and schools each year. With more and more television exposure and a postseason that is as compelling as any professional sport, college basketball is big business. In 2020, the NCAA tournament was cancelled due to COVID, which resulted in losses nearing $1 billion. Now, with the pandemic still raging there is more pressure than ever to get through March Madness. But at what cost? Teams across the country are limping toward March with pauses and cancellations every day. Is it fair or just to expect college athletes to put themselves in harm\u2019s way, play in front of few or no fans so that others can cash in on a big payday? Players have been more outspoken than ever about social justice and playing conditions as the issue of Name, Image and Likeness heads to the Supreme Court. Is this an inflection point in terms of the players\u2019 power and influence?<\/p>\n

Ley and Schecter speak with ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas and former UConn star, NBA player and Fox broadcaster Scott Burrell, who is currently the head coach at Southern Connecticut State University.<\/p>\n
