{"id":591,"date":"2019-10-04T12:57:20","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T16:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/?p=591"},"modified":"2019-10-04T12:57:43","modified_gmt":"2019-10-04T16:57:43","slug":"only-6-say-interest-in-baseball-will-decrease-if-home-runs-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/2019\/10\/04\/only-6-say-interest-in-baseball-will-decrease-if-home-runs-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"Only 6% Say Interest in Baseball Will Decrease if Home Runs Decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-593\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2019\/10\/baseball-2.svg_-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2019\/10\/baseball-2.svg_-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2019\/10\/baseball-2.svg_-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2019\/10\/baseball-2.svg_-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2019\/10\/baseball-2.svg_-624x624.png 624w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2019\/10\/baseball-2.svg_.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Improved Hitting, &#8216;Juiced&#8217; Baseballs Cited Over Worse Pitching for 2019 Jump in Long Balls<\/em><\/p>\n<p>South Orange NJ, October 4, 2019\u00a0 &#8212; If Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred follows through and finds a way to reduce home runs next season &#8211; 85% of the American public will maintain their interest in the game at current levels &#8211; and only 6% said their interest would decline.<\/p>\n<p>That was the finding of a Seton Hall Sports Poll conducted this week, where 3% said their interest would increase.\u00a0 6% didn\u2019t know or had no opinion.<\/p>\n<p>The Poll was conducted among 714 adult Americans across the country, either on landline or cellphone.\u00a0 The poll has a margin of error of +\/- 3.8 percent.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Asked why they thought Major League home run totals were up in 2019, 34% said it was improved hitting, 24% said juiced baseballs, and only 6% said worse pitching.\u00a0 25% said they didn\u2019t know or had no opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Home runs were up 11% over the previous record in 2019 with two teams (Twins and Yankees) breaking the 300 barrier for the first time. 6,776 home runs were hit in all, with 25 of the 30 teams topping 200.\u00a0 An average game saw 2.78 homers this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe home run will always be an exciting play, and the public talks about the increase, but on balance, they like baseball whether the totals are up or down,\u201d noted Rick Gentile, director of the Seton Hall Sports Poll, which is sponsored by the Sharkey Institute within the Stillman School of Business.<\/p>\n<p>(Questions and result breakdowns further below).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>About the poll:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This poll was conducted by telephone April 16-19 among adults in the United States. The Seton Hall Sports Poll is conducted by the Sharkey Institute within the Stillman School of Business. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard landline and cell phones.\u00a0 The error for subgroups may be higher. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.
