{"id":440,"date":"2017-10-27T11:15:58","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T15:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/?p=440"},"modified":"2017-10-27T11:34:45","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T15:34:45","slug":"americans-throw-penalty-flags-at-both-goodell-and-trump-for-their-positions-on-the-nfl-standkneel-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/2017\/10\/27\/americans-throw-penalty-flags-at-both-goodell-and-trump-for-their-positions-on-the-nfl-standkneel-issue\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans Throw Penalty Flags at Both Goodell and Trump for their Positions on the NFL Stand\/Kneel Issue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-74\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2015\/10\/Seton-Hall-University-Stillman-School-of-Business-e1446518788655-300x125.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2015\/10\/Seton-Hall-University-Stillman-School-of-Business-e1446518788655-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/sportspoll\/files\/2015\/10\/Seton-Hall-University-Stillman-School-of-Business-e1446518788655.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><em>Americans Throw Penalty Flags at Both Goodell and Trump for their Positions on the NFL Stand\/Kneel Issue; 82% Say &#8216;Advise Parents on Risk of Youth Football&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>South Orange, NJ, October 27, 2017 \u2014 By a 47% to 42% margin, Americans believe that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should have ordered the league\u2019s players to stand during the national anthem.<\/p>\n<p>By a wider margin &#8211; 55% v. 37% &#8211; people said it was inappropriate for President Trump to request that people sign a petition saying that the players stand.<\/p>\n<p>These were among the findings of the latest Seton Hall Sports Poll, conducted this week across the nation among 715 adults, on landlines and cellphones.\u00a0 The poll has a margin of error of 3.7%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president\u2019s base, which polls consistently show to be in the 35% area, seems to support him at every turn without wavering, and that extends to his war of words with the NFL,\u201d said Rick Gentle, director of the poll, which is sponsored by The Sharkey Institute as part of the university\u2019s Stillman School of Business.\u00a0 \u201cThe 37% support on this question is consistent with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut clearly,\u201d added Gentile, \u201cGoodell\u2019s position lacks strong public support.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a tough issue for people who love football, love the flag, and still respect freedom of expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>MATTERS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY IN YOUTH FOOTBALL ADDRESSED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Poll also asked a number of questions related to the safety of youth football.\u00a0 Asked if football organizing groups should have medical personnel advise parents about the dangers of playing organized football before their child signs up to play, a huge 82% said yes, with only 11% saying no.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if they thought youth football leagues through high school are taking adequate steps to improve the safety of the game, 49% said yes, and only 22% said no.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were also asked at what age he or she would allow a child to play football, 39% said ages 7-11, 27% said ages 12-15, and only 9% said age 16 and over.\u00a0 20% responded \u201cnever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is significant that one in five &#8211; 20% &#8211; say \u2018never\u2019 for the sport considered the most popular one in America,\u201d noted Gentile.<\/p>\n<p>The Official Seton Hall Sports Poll podcast discussing this topic (and yesterday\u2019s release on baseball questions) with Seth Everett and Rick Gentile can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/mt\/podcast\/seton-hall-sports-poll\/id1053266467\">https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/mt\/podcast\/seton-hall-sports-poll\/id1053266467<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ABOUT SETON HALL UNIVERSITY<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the country\u2019s leading Catholic universities, Seton Hall University has been a catalyst for leadership \u2014 developing students in mind, heart and spirit \u2014 since 1856.
