Executive Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarship.shu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1616&amp;context=faculty-senate-agendas\">report<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">i. <em>Motion:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Whereas, Dr. Larry Robinson has successfully served as Provost and Executive Vice-President of Seton Hall University since 2011 and as Interim Provost and Vice Provost before that; and<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Whereas, throughout his tenure, Dr. Robinson has demonstrated strong leadership, a marked commitment to collaboration with faculty, and support for academic freedom; and<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Whereas, among his many achievements, Dr. Robinson has played instrumental roles in developing the University\u2019s strategic plan, in enhancing the profile of incoming students, in stabilizing and increasing enrollment and retention, in guiding the University through historically difficult economic conditions, and in forming a new Medical School;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Be it resolved that the Faculty Senate warmly congratulates Dr. Robinson on his retirement and thanks him for his outstanding contributions to the improvement of Seton Hall University. He leaves the University in a much better position in terms of finances, organization, and reputation than when he arrived, almost ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p>7. Second Reading\u00a0of revised Article 3.2.c<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><strong>MOTION<\/strong>: To replace the language of Article 3.2.c that currently reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In the event of a decision not to renew a probationary appointment, the faculty member shall be informed by the dean of the decision in writing, and shall be advised of the reasons which contributed to that decision. If the faculty member so requests, the reason given for the nonrenewal of an appointment shall be confirmed in writing. In cases of denial of an application for tenure, see article 5.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">With<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">In the event of a decision not to renew a probationary appointment, the department will provide evidence to the dean substantiating its recommendation SHOULD THE DEAN DECIDE TO OVERRULE A DEPARTMENT\u2019S RECOMMENDATION TO RENEW A PROBATIONARY APPOINTMENT, THE DEAN WILL PROVIDE EVIDENCE SUBSTANTIATING THAT DECISION. In the case of a decision not to renew a probationary appointment, the applicant has the right to appeal from the department, and, in the library, from the committee to the dean, and also from the dean to the provost. The faculty member shall be informed by the dean of the decision in writing, and shall be advised of the reasons which contributed to that decision.\u00a0 In cases of denial of an application for tenure, see article 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">* Note: The sentence in upper case was added to the motion presented at the Oct. 2016 Senate meeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">ii.\u00a0First reading\u00a0of proposed change to Article 7. 5. c. This motion was remanded to the Faculty Guide committee at the <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarship.shu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1035&amp;context=faculty-senate-minutes\">October 2016 Senate meeting.<\/a> The committee reviewed and discussed the proposed motion and we are bringing it back unchanged for a first reading. The committee believes that this language clarifies the intent of Article 7.5.c and asks that the body vote on the proposed motion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><strong>MOTION<\/strong>: To replace the language of Article 7.5. c<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">No faculty member with time reassigned (released) from teaching to research or administrative duties is eligible for teaching overload.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">iii. First reading\u00a0of proposed change to Article 5.1.d to include a second sentence (highlighted) that clarifies that only professors can vote for promotion to professor. This is consistent with Article 5.4. a that addresses the issue at the College level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><strong>MOTION: <\/strong>To amend Article 5.1.d to include a second sentence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>All applications for promotion to the ranks of associate professor, professor, and for tenure are initially submitted to the department and, after departmental review and recommendation, to the dean. <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">In departmental review, all tenured professors vote on promotion to tenure; only full professors may vote on promotion to professor.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>iv. First reading\u00a0of a motion to add language to Article 5.5.d that addressed the situation where there are no or few professors in a department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><strong>MOTION: <\/strong>To amend Article 5.5.d to read (the bold sentences are additions to 5.d).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Department guidelines for promotion\/tenure that include a statement of research and publication expectations, must be committed to writing after formal departmental approval, and copies of same must be provided to all probationary and tenured faculty at the time of appointment. <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">Such guidelines shall include guidelines for voting procedures for promotion to full professor when there are no faculty of that rank in the department.<\/span> <strong>Only full professors may vote on promotions to full professor. When there are no faculty of that rank in the department, specific procedures shall be developed to address this situation and included in the department guidelines for promotion and tenure. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">e.
