{"id":1084,"date":"2013-03-07T12:29:55","date_gmt":"2013-03-07T17:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/senate\/?page_id=1084"},"modified":"2017-06-16T12:54:35","modified_gmt":"2017-06-16T16:54:35","slug":"centers-of-excellence","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/senate\/centers-of-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Centers of Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">SETON HALL UNIVERSITY<\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0Office of the Provost &amp; Executive Vice President<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">Colleagues:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">I am pleased to announce progress on an integral aspect of Seton Hall\u2019s Strategic Plan.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><i>From Strength to Strength<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0calls for selective investment in high-performing and high-potential academic programs.\u00a0 Toward this end, we are ready to announce three exemplary programs that have achieved the designation of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><i>Centers of Excellence.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">The application process for becoming a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><i>Center of Excellence<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0was launched last fall and several worthy proposals were considered. After careful and thorough consideration, the following programs have been awarded this distinction: the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Accounting<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>program<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Stillman School of Business<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">, the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Finance<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>program<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Stillman School<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">, and the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Graduate programs<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Whitehead School of Diplomacy<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">Though all applicants for this distinction among the schools and colleges showed merit, the applications submitted by these three programs were especially compelling and thoroughly addressed the criteria established for this designation. These programs are now flagships for what it means to be a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><i>Center of Excellence<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0at Seton Hall. This designation will serve as a framework for investments resulting in additional academic and instructional budgetary support commencing in the spring and continuing through the fall. In the years to come I hope and expect to encounter a two or three-fold increase in our applicant pool for this unique distinction. While many programs applied, several that would have been considered strongly for this honor did not.\u00a0 Later this spring we will announce timelines for a second round of designations and it is my hope that more programs from more of our colleges will take advantage of this opportunity.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\"><i>Centers of Excellence<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">\u00a0designation lasts for three years. At the end of this time a chosen program may re-apply and should be prepared to demonstrate the benefits and progress that resulted from the University\u2019s designation and investment.\u00a0 In the next few weeks, my office will be in contact with representatives of the designated programs to prepare for a comprehensive assessment process and to outline a plan for investment.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: medium\">I would like to thank all of the programs that submitted applications as well as the faculty, deans and administrators from different areas within the University who reviewed the applications.\u00a0 My expectation is that we will continue to have updates on the progress of the Strategic Plan later this semester.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: large\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Garamond, serif;font-size: large\"><i>Dr. Larry A.
