My name is Priscilla\u00a0<\/span>Haingo<\/span>\u00a0Plat<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0I am a second-year graduate student in\u00a0<\/span>the School of\u00a0<\/span>Diplomacy\u00a0<\/span>& In<\/span>ternational Relations at Seton Hall University<\/span>. I am\u00a0<\/span>originally from Madagascar and France<\/span>\u00a0and nearly<\/span>\u00a0a year ago, after moving out of Paris, I started the M.A. program offered by the School of Diplomacy<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I knew\u00a0<\/span>such an academic endeavor\u00a0<\/span>would\u00a0<\/span>be a crucial step in the right direction to help<\/span>\u00a0narrow my career path, develop leadership skills, and\u00a0<\/span>uncover\u00a0<\/span>unique professional opportunities.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among these\u00a0<\/span>unique opportunities was\u00a0<\/span>a remote internship at the Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP)<\/span>. GCSP is\u00a0<\/span>an international foundation focused on building and maintaining global peace, security and stability<\/span>. I joined the organization\u00a0<\/span>in the midst of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the coronavirus\u00a0<\/span>pandemic, assuming the role of Young Leader in Foreign and Security Policy, as part of their prestigious Global Fellowship Initiative (GFI). My\u00a0<\/span>graduate school\u00a0<\/span>specializations are global negotiation and conflict management, with a regional focus on Africa. Therefore, getting an insider\u2019s view of a Geneva-based institution with 45 affiliated member states, which is recognized as one of the world\u2019s leading centers for executive education, policy analysis and diplomatic dialogue, constitutes a dream internship experience for the political affairs specialist, policy analyst and diplomat that I aspire to be.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With\u00a0<\/span>GCSP\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>engaged in<\/span> research, data collection, and leadership skills for activities surrounding climate change<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>migration,\u00a0<\/span>international security,\u00a0<\/span>foresight in Africa, conflict prevention, and the nexus between terrorism and organized crime in all its forms. Alternating between strategic anticipation and terrorism in relation to preventing violent extremism (PVE) essentially determines the work that I am doing with the Center.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0<\/span>significant<\/span>\u00a0portion of the expertise I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>appl<\/span>ied<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>the Center\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>projects related to key security and peace policy issues\u00a0<\/span>that I<\/span>\u00a0acquired during my first year of graduate school<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ourses such as Institutions of Post-Conflict Governance, Peacemaking and Peacekeeping, and the Art and Science of Negotiation, as well as\u00a0<\/span>various\u00a0<\/span>on-campus event<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>organized by the School of Diplomacy, undoubtedly sharpened <\/span>my knowledge and analytical thinking on foreign policy and international security.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Given the circumstances, performing remotely and coordinating with my colleagues who are based in Geneva, has caused me to develop more effective reporting methods and rearrange my daily schedule, keeping in mind that time difference is a challenge that has to be overcome in order to meet deadlines and reach individual, collective<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and global objectives<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

N<\/span>ot only does this fellowship program provide its participants with executive courses, conferences, seminars, workshops and the chance to participate in regional or issue-specific collaborative designs<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but it also offers exclusive networking connections<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0notably, GCSP\u2019s experts, executive<\/span>s<\/span>-in-residence, associate<\/span>s<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>doctoral and government fellows<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0I would highly recommend any student majoring in international relations apply and make the most of\u00a0<\/span>this fellowship program<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0the pursuit of a thriving career.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
