The East Village has changed over the years, but in the time that <em>Rent<\/em> was produced, it was a hub of artists. However, it was also where gentrification was occurring. The remnants of 300 homeless people still resided in the East Village until they were expelled in 1991. They had been living in tents in Tompkins Square Park which was in the heart of the neighborhood.<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\">[15]<\/a> In the song \u201cYou\u2019ll See\u201d, Roger states \u201cYou can\u2019t just wipe out an entire tent city then watch \u2018It\u2019s a wonderful Life\u2019 on TV,\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\">[16]<\/a> so the homeless presence was being prevalent and being threatened even in <em>Rent<\/em>. Abu-Lughod also writes about \u201cGroups of squatters who had taken over a good number of abandoned buildings scattered throughout the zone,\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a> which Mark, Roger, and Mimi had to do when their apartment was padlocked and their belongings were removed. Alphabet City was a large part of the character\u2019s lives, particularly Avenue A which Angel sings about in \u201cToday 4 U\u201d and Avenue B is where the Life Caf\u00e9 was located.
