{"id":1025,"date":"2011-11-06T11:52:23","date_gmt":"2011-11-06T15:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/newarkchurchescopy2\/?p=1025"},"modified":"2011-11-06T12:16:25","modified_gmt":"2011-11-06T16:16:25","slug":"newark-saint-mary-newark-abbey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/newarkchurches\/archives\/1025","title":{"rendered":"Newark &#8211; Saint Mary (Newark Abbey)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beginning in 1842, Mass was celebrated continually in Newark for the growing German Catholic population.<\/p>\n<p>In 1854, the church was ransacked by mobs of &#8220;Know Nothings&#8221; and Orangemen.<\/p>\n<p>In 1856, the care of the Newark German Catholic parish, &#8220;St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception&#8221; was entrusted to the Benedictine monks. The present church was opened in 1857.
