{"id":967,"date":"2024-05-05T23:57:30","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T03:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/mvdh\/?page_id=967"},"modified":"2024-05-07T22:51:06","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T02:51:06","slug":"united-states-lighthouse-service-buildings","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/mvdh\/the-watering-place\/united-states-lighthouse-service-buildings\/","title":{"rendered":"United States Lighthouse Service Buildings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By an act of Congress on March 3, 1863,\u00a0 $50,000 was appropriated for the purchase of a lot and erection of a suitable building for the federal Lighthouse Establishment.\u00a0 After considering some locations to purchase land for a General Lighthouse Depot,\u00a0 it was decided to save funds by transferring to the U.S. Lighthouse Service some of the Staten Island property already owned by the federal government &#8211;\u00a0 the northern half of the 5 acre property of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service on the former Quarantine Grounds. By 1867 the remaining half of the 5 acre plot was transferred to the U.S. Lighthouse Service and several additional buildings were constructed.\u00a0 Some of those buildings still stand as landmarked structures at Light House Point in present day St. George, but they are still waiting to be incorporated into economic development projects.
