{"id":339,"date":"2011-05-04T13:21:24","date_gmt":"2011-05-04T17:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/?p=339"},"modified":"2020-07-31T14:50:02","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T18:50:02","slug":"jose-camacho-%e2%80%93-how-to-speak-puerto-rican","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/2011\/05\/jose-camacho-%e2%80%93-how-to-speak-puerto-rican\/","title":{"rendered":"Jose Camacho \u2013 How to Speak Puerto Rican"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/files\/2011\/05\/jose-camacho_la-isla-es-la-isla.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-342\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/files\/2011\/05\/jose-camacho_la-isla-es-la-isla-684x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/files\/2011\/05\/jose-camacho_la-isla-es-la-isla-684x1024.jpg 684w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/files\/2011\/05\/jose-camacho_la-isla-es-la-isla-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/files\/2011\/05\/jose-camacho_la-isla-es-la-isla.jpg 1203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Monday June 6th \u2013 Thursday July 21st, 2011<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opening Reception:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, June 9 \u2013 5pm to 9pm<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University is pleased to present How to Speak Puerto Rican, a solo exhibition featuring artist Jose Camacho.\u00a0 Camacho was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and moved to America as a young adult in the 1980\u2019s.\u00a0 These dual perspectives influence Camacho\u2019s artwork, revealing a romantic, yet candid outlook on both cultures.\u00a0 Identity politics play a large part in his creative arsenal, which draws upon such influences as Puerto Rican folk music, Spanish classical literature, modernist painting and American pop culture.\u00a0 The artworks on view include painting, mixed media and sculpture.<\/p>\n<p>Curator Jeanne Brasile notes that while Jose\u2019s message is strongly informed by his Puerto Rican heritage, \u201cI am also drawn to his use of materials and his process.\u00a0 Jose\u2019s interest in surface and texture is apparent in his many paintings and drawings, which typically consist of layered materials such as paint, paper and graphite.\u201d\u00a0 Process-wise, Camacho\u2019s approach is laborious, and he\u2019ll often re-work his art over a period of years, adding and\/or subtracting layers to achieve the desired effect.\u00a0 The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with an essay by art historian Niria Leyva-Gutierrez.\u00a0 Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:30am to 4:30pm.\u00a0 Admission is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>For 150 years, Seton Hall University has been a catalyst for leadership, developing the whole student, mind, heart and spirit.
