however, the issues selected for this digitization project were limited to the years 1958-1964, the era of the Second Vatican Council, enabling researchers to examine this period and its impact on the Newark Catholic community.\u00a0 The project digitizes newspapers from around the country, enabling scholars to examine differences and similarities between regions during this period.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2100\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/07\/CA-screenshot.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2100\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/07\/CA-screenshot-300x145.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of Catholic News Archives\" width=\"366\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot of Catholic News Archives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seton Hall Special Collections and University Library staff selected the best quality images to scan and provided description of the materials to allow for the detailed searches that are now possible.\u00a0 As part of the digitization process, the text was captured using Optical Character Recognition (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Optical_character_recognition\">OCR<\/a>) to allow for keyword searches of the entire text of each article, not just the titles.\u00a0 If a word or name is mentioned anywhere in an article or even in a photograph caption, it will be found in the powerful search engine used in the portal.\u00a0 However, because the contents were read by machine, interpretive errors are possible in the text.\u00a0 Therefore, the public is invited to read and correct the text, and particularly active commentators are acknowledged on the website in a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thecatholicnewsarchive.org\/?a=p&amp;p=textcorrectstats&amp;e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-------\">Hall of Fame<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2102\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/07\/CA-text.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2102\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/07\/CA-text-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"Article text interface\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Article text interface<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The CRRA has digitized many more newspapers as part of its project, including the San Francisco Archdiocese\u2019s\u00a0<em>Monitor,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0<em>Clarion Herald\u00a0<\/em>of New Orleans, and the\u00a0<em>Catholic Telegraph\u00a0<\/em>of Cincinnati, among others.\u00a0 The project and the construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thecatholicnewsarchive.org\/\">Catholic News Archive website<\/a>\u00a0was the recipient of a Catholic Communications Campaign <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/catholic-giving\/opportunities-for-giving\/catholic-communication-campaign\/grants\/index.cfm\">grant<\/a> from the United States <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/\">Conference of Catholic Bishops<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2106\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/07\/20180718_095323-e1531922760228.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2106\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/07\/20180718_095323-e1531922760228-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"Student working with online resources\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Student working with online resources<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The digitized materials are currently being utilized in classes at Seton Hall University.\u00a0 Professor Alan Delozier, University Archivist, has introduced students to this new resource in his class \u201cNew Jersey Catholic Experience,\u201d offered through the Department of Catholic Studies.\u00a0 Students are able to use this powerful new tool to conduct in-depth research on the history of the Catholic New Jersey community.<\/p>\n<p>The new portal and all of its content can be explored <a href=\"https:\/\/thecatholicnewsarchive.org\/\">here<\/a>;
