{"id":1163,"date":"2015-03-26T13:11:18","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T17:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/?p=1163"},"modified":"2015-03-26T15:06:48","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T19:06:48","slug":"pilot-policy-starting-sunday-april-19-group-study-rooms-8-hr-time-limit-during-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/2015\/03\/pilot-policy-starting-sunday-april-19-group-study-rooms-8-hr-time-limit-during-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilot Policy starting Sunday, April 19  Group Study Rooms:  8-hr Time Limit During Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pilot Policy starting Sunday, April 19 \u00a0Group Study Rooms: \u00a08-hr Time Limit During Finals\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/libraries\/files\/2015\/03\/Group-Study-Room-Pilot-Project.pdf\">Group Study Room Pilot Project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To the Setonian:\u00a0 Library Pilot for Spring \u201915:\u00a0 Time Limits on Group Study Rooms During the 24\/7 Period<\/p>\n<p>We have had many complaints from students about Group Study Rooms being monopolized during Finals for 24, 36 or even 48 hours straight.\u00a0 We are aware that some students did not want these kinds of rules, but we are receiving more and more complaints each semester.\u00a0 So we are piloting this policy for this semester to try and set time limits on the use of Group Study Rooms during Finals, with fines in place for going over time.\u00a0 This pilot of a new policy would ensure a turnover of the rooms so that more students have access to them, and we want to try it this semester. \u00a0\u00a0We put a survey explaining\/asking about this on the Libraries\u2019 website for over a week before Spring Break, and we had around 300 responses:\u00a0 roughly 55% supported the idea and 45% didn\u2019t support it.\u00a0 However, some of the angriest comments were from the \u201cno\u201d group, and we\u2019ve adjusted the time periods and fines in response to those comments.\u00a0 \u00a0We\u2019re now reaching out to the Setonian to let the students know the pilot policy:<\/p>\n<p><em>Two students must present their IDs to obtain a room key, which will have two barcodes (one to link to each ID \u2013 that way the time keeping is very easy) to check out the key to both of them.\u00a0 There will be a <strong>8-hour time limit<\/strong> on use of the room during Finals.\u00a0 After 8 hours, both students must return the key, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">each<\/span> will be required to pay a fine of $3.00 per \u00bc hour (15 minutes).\u00a0 There will be a $3.00 fine per person per each 15 minutes late \u2013 we\u2019ll give a small grace period of 10 minutes if it is turned in a little late.\u00a0 (We\u2019ll also give them a note saying what time the keys are due back when they check the key out, and that there are no renewals unless no one is on the waiting list for the room.)\u00a0 In this way, the room can be freed up for the next group of students who requested it, and more students will have access to the Group Study Rooms during a period of very high demand and heavy use. \u00a0The next group will have no more than 8 hours to use it.\u00a0 A simple sign-up sheet will be used to reserve the next available room: \u00a0students must show their SHU IDs and then can provide us with two phone numbers to text, or two e-mails to notify them of room availability.\u00a0 If they don\u2019t show up to claim their room in 15 minutes, it will go to the next two people who signed up.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Please note that our goal is <strong>not <\/strong>to collect more fine monies.\u00a0 The goal is to distribute the rooms more widely for more students to use them during finals.\u00a0 We begin staying open 24\/7 on April 19<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 we wanted to reach out to the Setonian to inform students, but we\u2019ll also put a couple of posters up in the entrance to the Library at the end of this week, a notice on our website, and the same information on our flat screen with our hours in the main reading room.\u00a0 Students will have plenty of notification that we\u2019re piloting this policy \u2013 and that, by a 10 point margin in the survey they voted for it!\u00a0 There is one more piece of good news:\u00a0 we are making <strong>three more Group Study Rooms available in time for Finals<\/strong> \u2013 that\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">six<\/span> more rooms given over to the students in the last 2.5 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pilot Policy starting Sunday, April 19 \u00a0Group Study Rooms: \u00a08-hr Time Limit During Finals\u00a0Group Study Room Pilot Project To the Setonian:\u00a0 Library Pilot for Spring \u201915:\u00a0 Time Limits on Group Study Rooms During the 24\/7 Period We have had many complaints from students about Group Study Rooms being monopolized during Finals for 24, 36 or &hellip;
