{"id":949,"date":"2015-09-28T17:23:20","date_gmt":"2015-09-28T21:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/lawrencefrizzell\/?p=949"},"modified":"2015-09-28T17:56:11","modified_gmt":"2015-09-28T21:56:11","slug":"interfaith-gathering-with-pope-francis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/lawrencefrizzell\/interfaith-gathering-with-pope-francis\/","title":{"rendered":"Multi-Religious Gathering with Pope Francis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Deep in the rock of lower Manhattan a Memorial and Museum has two levels beneath the street level.\u00a0Along with the flow of water into deep nearby pools, this edifice commemorates the vicious attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pope Francis addressed the United Nations General Assembly on the morning of September 25, 2015 and then came to a different experience of many nations; these were religious communities living in New York City and the surrounding area.\u00a0They bore witness by their presence to the hope of building a spiritual edifice to strengthen the commitment of all to a vision of harmony built on mutual understanding that, in their diversity, they may contribute to the life of justice that lays the foundation for true peace in this city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For the Catholic Church this commitment was expressed profoundly in the Second Vatican Council\u2019s Declaration of the Church\u2019s Relation to Non-Christian Religions (<em>Nostra Aetate<\/em>), which was\u00a0promulgated on October 28, 1965.\u00a0The anniversary was commemorated as background to this ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The Pope ended his \u201cPrayer for Remembrance\u201d that God<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;padding-left: 30px\">\u201cComfort and console us,<br \/>\nStrengthen us in hope,<br \/>\nAnd give us the wisdom and courage<br \/>\nTo work tirelessly for a world<br \/>\nWhere true peace and love reign<br \/>\nAmong nations and in the hearts of all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After five religious leaders read a message of peace from traditions of East and West, the Jewish prayer in memory of the deceased was chanted.\u00a0Pope Francis offered a reflection that can be read on Zenit\u00a0 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenit.org\/en\/articles\/pope-s-address-at-ground-zero\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.zenit.org\/en\/articles\/pope-s-address-at-ground-zero<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To symbolize hope for the future, the Young People\u2019s Chorus of New York City sang \u201cLet There Be Peace on Earth.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0[youtube]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fH2FekyDKdw[\/youtube]May this experience become a foundation for the flow of peace to reach far beyond the five boroughs of New York City!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deep in the rock of lower Manhattan a Memorial and Museum has two levels beneath the street level.\u00a0Along with the flow of water into deep nearby pools, this edifice commemorates the vicious attack on the World Trade Center on September &hellip;
