The former spent his early career in Padua, whereas the latter, son of the famous artist Jacopo Bellini, was raised in Venice. \u201cHowever, when the former married Giovanni\u2019s half-sister, Nicolosia, in 1453, the two painters entered into a close creative dialogue\u2026[T]heir enduring artistic exchange indelibly marked their own art and that of their contemporaries.\u201d (See Mary Tompkins Lewis,<em>\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mantegna-and-bellini-review-a-family-affair-1541242800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mantegna-and-bellini-review-a-family-affair-1541242800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mantegna and Bellini\u2019 Review: A Family Affair<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, November 3, 2018). This essay and Laura Gaseoigne\u2019s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetablet.co.uk\/arts\/11\/14681\/different-strokes-different-folks-mantegna-and-bellini-at-the-national-gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Different strokes, different folks<\/a>&#8221; in <em>The Tablet<\/em> (London) of October 18, 2018 reproduce the magnificent \u201cAgony in the Garden\u201d by each painter.<\/p>\n<p>The critics point to Mantegna\u2019s influence on Bellini, along with the unique features of each, but neither of the above-mentioned reports mentions the following points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mantegna has Jesus facing angels holding the Cross, and behind his back a vulture gazes down from a scrawny tree top.<\/li>\n<li>Bellini shows Jesus being confronted by an angel holding the cup of suffering.<\/li>\n<li>Neither artist depicts a garden of olive trees as described in the Gospel traditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For a reproduction of several paintings in this exhibition, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/whats-on\/exhibitions\/mantegna-and-bellini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/whats-on\/exhibitions\/mantegna-and-bellini<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Gallery in London has an exhibit of 90 paintings by Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) and Giovanni Bellini (circa 1435-1516).
