Podcasting

I do like a good podcast. What do I appreciate about podcasts?
- The ability to listen anywhere and anytime
- Getting me to think about something new
- Interview podcasts are better than someone blah blah blah ing
- The podcaster has a clear passion and interest in the topic at hand
Some of my favorite podcasts have been:
- Slate’s The Gist.
- Sporkful.
- Anything and everything from The New Yorker.
- A really great science podcast I can’t remember the name of, sadly, that disappeared some time ago. It discussed a research article every week and interviewed the person who wrote it. This is the podcast I’m going to model with my brand-new podcast.
Introducing “Jill’s Journal Club”
(Please suggest a better name. This is a working title.)
This is a new podcast by a librarian and for librarians, but I’ll try to keep it interesting for everyone. I’m going to try to cover all the things that I myself appreciate about a podcast.
Most importantly, I’m going to provide a service – we all have problems keeping up with our professional reading. So I’m going to tell you the good stuff about an article in my podcast episodes and in the next episode, I’ll interview the author of the article to make it more of a dialog and conversation for you, gentle listener.
I like the idea of connecting people with the same interests with this podcast. My first podcast will have an audience of one = me. My second an audience of two which will consist of me and the person I interview. Perhaps the person I interview will then listen to the third. I’m going to accrete an audience.
The first pilot podcast, however, is just me. I hope you enjoy it! I created it with “Voice Memo” on my 2013 MacBook Pro. I wanted to see if the sound quality was good enough — I think it was. Tell me if you agree.

I love this idea of a podcast for librarians. Maybe we can collaborate on something in the future 🙂
Hi Jill,
It was great listening to your podcast! I might be a math major who would not necessarily pick out this podcast to listen to on my own, but it still was a great one to listen to. Do not worry we all are behind on new studies and articles to better our practices. I agree that teaching students about literacy is so much more difficult than anything a rocket scientist does! It was great to hear about the RSIC study you talked about. Talking about where students find their sources is always an interesting question and lines up well with the website evaluation topics for module 6. it was great listening to your podcast and I hope you continue it sometime in the future!
P.S.: That is awesome you worked where the Hubble Space Telescope is,. That must have been a great experience!
Jill, I think sharing “current events” in library science research is a fantastic idea. There is so much out there that we all, no matter the field, never have time to review; maybe we skim the abstract at best.
What I found interesting is that as you speak about focusing your podcast about the latest research while having this first podcast recording being about how students evaluate research articles they may find. There are certainly lots of synergies here.
I quite like the title actually. It’s like we are journaling while we learn about journal articles. And I do like that the first two words start with a J!
I do hope you continue to provide others with the service. It will be greatly appreciated I am sure.
