Over half a century of political violence has taken the lives of more than 220,000 and displaced more than 5 million people. The two sides have been negotiating in Havana for four years according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/aug\/28\/farc-commander-cease-hostilities-colombia-government-rodrigo-londono\">the Guardian<\/a>, Colombia is holding a national referendum on October 2 to approve the deal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6,500 Migrants Rescued Off Libya<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In one of the largest rescue missions to date, around 6,500 people were rescued off Libya. Instability in the region has driven many people to escape on overcrowded vessels says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-37216881\">BBC<\/a>. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that 275,000 migrants still remain waiting to leave Libya.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>All-Refugee Olympic Team<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Five Olympic athletes who were previously in a large refugee camp at Kakuma, Kenya returned from Rio as heroes. The athletes plan to spend a week at the refugee camp before returning to their training camp in Nairobi. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/08\/29\/africa\/refugee-team-kakuma\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>, the camp currently holds more than 180,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kim Jong-un\u2019s Victory?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, North Korea launched a submarine-based ballistic missile. Kim Jong-un considers the test to be a \u201cgreat success and victory\u201d. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/08\/24\/world\/north-korea-missile-test-kim-jong-un\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>, this is the first time a North Korean missile has entered Japan\u2019s air defense identification zone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>US Accused of Planning Coup in Venezuela<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venezuela has frequently accused the US of plotting coups including one for this coming Thursday. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/venezuela-accuses-us-opposition-planning-coup-41727845\">ABC News<\/a>, government opponents plan to demand a recall referendum of President Nicolas Maduro on that very same day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diplomacy Fast Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who almost started an international incident with a \u201cprivate Christmas letter\u201d to home?<\/p>\n<p>Robin Berrington served in Dublin from 1978 to 1981.
