Room Change Day – Thursday, October 5th!

Room Change Day will take place on Thursday, October 5th in 68 Duffy Hall. Room Change Day allows residents the opportunity to change their current housing assignment. A room change can occur by either choosing to enter into a vacant assignment, or by switching assignments with another resident. If you wish to change into a vacant room assignment or switch assignments with another resident, you MUST come to the Housing and Residence Life Office, located in 68 Duffy Hall, on Room Change Day during the designated time for your desired residence hall.

A list of vacancies will be posted, in advance of Room Change Day, outside of the Housing and Residence Life Office (68 Duffy Hall) on Wednesday, October 4th at 5pm. If you wish to move into one of the posted vacancies, please attend the session listed below, on Room Change Day, for that location:

11:00AM-1:00PM
For filling vacancies or switching into
Boland and Aquinas Halls

2:00PM-3:00PM
For filling vacancies or switching into
Cabrini, Neumann, Serra, and Xavier Halls

3:00PM-4:00PM
For filling vacancies or switching into
Ora Manor and Turrell Manor

Important Points to Consider:
– Vacancies are limited, and will be filled on a first-come, first served basis.

– A list of vacancies will be posted outside of the Housing and Residence Life Office (68 Duffy Hall) on Wednesday, October 4th at 5pm.

– If you intend to make a room switch that is outside of your current residence hall (i.e you live in Turrell Manor but want to switch into Xavier Hall), please come at the building time for the residence hall that you wish to move INTO.

– If you cannot make the time scheduled for your particular need, please come to HRL (68 Duffy Hall) in advance, and complete a proxy form to send with someone else in your absence.

– We recommend you communicate your desire to move out with your current roommate in advance of Room Change Day, to be fair and prepare them for your departure.

– Upon changing rooms, residents will have 48 hours to check out of their old assignment and into their new assignment. Please plan accordingly.

If you have any questions about Room Change Day, please email shuhousing@shu.edu, or stop our office, located at 68 Duffy Hall.

Submitting a work order has never been easier!

This year, campus-wide, all resident students are able to submit work order requests through text message.  If you are encountering a non-urgent issue in your room that needs attention by our Facilities Management department, you can send your request through your cell phone!

Here’s what a resident needs to know before using this convenient reporting system –

  • The work order number should ONLY be used for non-urgent facilities issues in your room (a drippy faucet, a burnt out light, etc…)
  • Although you can submit a work order any time of day, the Residence Hall Director of the building only accesses the submitted work orders between 8:45 am and 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday.  Our staff make every effort to check this report at least twice a day, when they first report to the office and in the afternoon.
  • Do not use the work order number in the event of a serious facilities emergency (any time where the safety of the student or a structure is in danger).  Any facilities emergencies should be reported to your front desk staff immediately, who will report it to the appropriate Housing and Residence Life, Facilities Management and/or Public Safety staff.
  • In Ora and Turrell Manor, between 9 am and 5 pm, Facilities emergencies should be reported to RHD Katelyn Conroy at 973-761-9020.  After 5 PM, students should call Public Safety at 973-761-9300.  After 8 PM, they can report the emergency to the RA on duty.

The HRL staff member will receive your message, submit a formal work order to Facilities Management, who then dispatch their staff to address your work order.

Any other questions, comments or concerns regarding your experience in our residence halls should be discussed, in person, with the Residence Hall Director or Residence Coordinator of your building, available in their offices between 8:45 am and 4:45 pm on weekdays.  You can also speak to the Resident Assistant on your floor or the Resident Assistants on duty, who are available starting at 8 pm every night until 9 am the next morning, Monday through Friday, and 24 hours during the weekend.

Work orders should be submitted to the number associated with your residence hall –

Aquinas- 973-996-8192

Boland- 973-913-5832

Complex- 973.913.4511

Turrell and Ora Manors- 973-913-5281

Xavier – 973-657-2146

In the text message, include your name, room number and a specific description of the issue.

We remind you that this number will not put you in direct contact with a member of Housing and Residence Life staff.  Do not call this number.  Do not submit a text message to this number if it is a serious facilities emergency that needs an immediate resolution.  Do not submit a text message to this number if you are experiencing a noise complaint, roommate conflict, or other issue associated with your residential experience.  We want you to discuss these things in person with a member of HRL staff.

Live Chat with HRL on our NEW website!

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new, mobile-friendly, responsive website! You’ll find that information is better organized, easier to find, and much more plain and simple to navigate.

Our website features an overview of department information which will be supplemented by blog posts from this blog for further, date-specific information.

But we’re even more excited that our website provides us another way to connect with YOU! We’ve added a chat feature to our website that is staffed during business hours (9am-5pm) by a real life HRL professional!  While we still enjoy your emails, you’ll find our chat will get you real-time information when you’re looking for it.  To find our chat, just look for the “Let’s talk” box at the bottom right hand corner of your screen – yup it’s even there on this blog page!  If it says online, there’s a HRL professional there waiting to talk to you! If it’s after hours and it says offline, you can leave us a message and we’ll get back to you when we’re back in the office. We’re so excited to chat with you that we will give the 1st, 10th, 20th, and 56th person to chat with us through the website their very own Seton Hall t-shirt!

If there’s anything you’d like to see on our website that could enhance your user experience, please let us know. (Sounds like a great way to try out the chat feature!)

Lock Out Charges and Lock Changes

While it’s our expectation that you carry your key with you at all times, we understand things happen. If you find yourself locked out of your room (don’t worry, it happens) our RA staff is here to help! For a small fee added to your student account, an RA or any member of the HRL staff can let you back into your room.

Lock-out fees are as follows:

1st lock out = $10

2nd lock out = $15

3rd lock out = $25

If your key is lost, we will change your lock and replace your key for your own safety.  The charge for this service is $96 and will be added to your student account should this happen to you.

We recommend rocking one of those cool lanyards for sale in the bookstore or remembering to check your pockets/bag for your keys before you or your roommate leave the room.

Courtesy Checks

HRL staff (an RA and your RHD or RC) will be entering your rooms for the next two weeks to conduct Courtesy Checks.

During these inspections, staff will confiscate and give you a warning regarding any items in your room that do not meet our health and safety guidelines.  You’ll have a chance to bring the item home (or to somewhere else off-campus) at no penalty and without any judicial documentation.

Staff will leave behind a half-page form with the status of your Courtesy Check after it has been completed.

If you have questions about this process, please speak with your RA.

Freshmen Roommate Selection

We are so excited to have you join us on campus this Fall. If you are planning to live in University housing, you have until 10pm on July 4th to select a roommate (or two, or up to five suitemates), if there’s someone out there with whom you’d like to live. If you haven’t found someone to room with just yet, don’t worry! We can use the answers you’ve provided on your housing application to match you up with someone who will best contribute to your experience on campus.

Check out this website for a guide to picking a good roommate: https://www13.shu.edu/offices/housing-residence-life/freshmen-roommate-selection.cfm

For those of you who are ready to select a roommate, please follow the instructions on this Prezi to guide you through the process: http://tinyurl.com/SHURoommate

Spend your Summer in Sunny South Orange – Summer Housing Applications Now Available!

If you’re taking summer classes or have a University-affiliated job or internship, you’re welcome to sign up for Summer Housing.

Summer Housing will be assigned in South Boland Hall this year.  Students who wish to apply for summer housing may do so through the Summer Housing Application under the applications tab on their Housing Profile on PirateNet. There is no housing deposit required.

Summer room assignments are made “hotel style” meaning that room assignments will be made at the time of check in. Students wishing to be roommates should plan to check in together.

Summer 2017 Housing Rates

Registration time, Pirates!

As per our Housing License Agreement (that long document you agree to before you complete the Roommate Survey/Housing Application), you must be registered as a full-time student (which means 12 or more credits) unless you are graduating next semester to live in housing.

In other words, if you’re not signed up for classes for Fall 2017, you cannot select a room during Room Selection, no matter how many Priority Points you’ve accumulated.

Check out the Seton Hall University registration schedule here and do everything you can to get registered for Fall 2017 before it’s time for you to pick a room.
