The Importance of Accessibility – We build a better world accommodating everyone’s abilities

“When websites and web tools are properly designed and coded, people with disabilities can use them. However, currently many sites and tools are developed with accessibility barriers that make them difficult or impossible for some people to use.

Making the web accessible benefits individuals, businesses, and society. International web standards define what is needed for accessibility.” – Summary from W3.org regarding web accessibility

Main Takeaways of learning more about web accessibility

  • Providing accessible web content benefits everyone. A disability should not make you feel any less needed than anyone else because working as a team is better than alone. We have a lot of work to get it all sorted out but we can get there. Websites such as YouTube provide user that are deaf subtitles so they can too make use of the platform – this allows deaf user the opportunity to participate in learning or simply enjoy a funny video.

Why is digital accessibility so important?

  • It provides those that have disability the ability to utilize the same tools as anyone else. The web wide world contains all information known to man, and everyone should be able to access it equally. A person with a disability should be able to freely create, participate, and enjoy the internet.

How can we promote a culture of inclusion?

  • A disability does not always limit your ability to create. We are all individuals therefore allowing us to uniquely think and express our thoughts. Web accessibility helps everyone feels included. One of the tools that was created as a result of web accessibility reaches out beyond physical or mental limitations – website translation and it has helped many around the world. In Elise Roy’s TEDx Talk she highlights a very important reason, in my opinion, why a disability does not limit your ability to create – this should be used as a reference to promote web accessibility, because she used her hearing loss as a motivator to create solutions for everyone.

  1. Hi Jeison,
I loved reading your blog and really learned so much on why accessibility is essential! I thought your use of bullet points really pulled together your work and kept me in the loop. Also, the use of a quote in your blog was extremely successful in hooking me in as a reader, and I hope to take inspiration from this! Overall, I thought your work was amazing and I can’t wait to see all the other wonderful things you create this semester!

  2. Hi Jeison – You make a great point that everyone needs to be included. This is not just a nice to have but a necessity as so much of what we do it now online (banking, telehealth, mental health services, shopping, etc). I think this was highlighted when COVID hit and so many people relied on the internet for resources (it also highlighted the inequities in being able to pay for internet service).

  3. Hey, Jeison!

I enjoyed reading your blog post on digital accessibility. I think after spending two week on digital accesbailyt it really expands your knowledge. Which is what I think is very important. I also included Elise Roy Tedx Talk because she is an inpouring voice to listen. Great Post!!

  4. Hi Jeison, I appreciate how you started with a quote that not only summarizes what your post will be about but also entices the reader to continue reading. Additionally, by using the bullet points and having the information be separated it is easy to read and very comprehensive. I agree with what you said about the importance of digital accessibility. Everyone should be able to access content freely no matter what.
