Until now, the concept of the avant-garde has been restricted to American theatrical forms born after the end of World War II. Such a chronological constraint overlooks the aesthetically innovative and politically subversive works that existed well before the 1950s and those that emerged after the 1970s. This study goes beyond the concept of the \u201chistorical avant-garde\u201d in order to examine the creation of iconoclastic works that could, more generally, be understood as part of an ongoing experimental vanguard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/2025\/02\/un-siecle-davant-garde-essai-sur-le-teatre-etasunien\/visual_avantgarde\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1757\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1757\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde-741x1024.jpg 741w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde-109x150.jpg 109w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde-768x1061.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde-1112x1536.jpg 1112w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde-624x862.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/glaspellsociety\/files\/2025\/02\/visual_avantgarde.jpg 1294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a>Three waves of avant-garde work are identified and discussed. The first corresponds to the birth of a national U.S. theatre during the period 1910-1940. The second wave tracks the post-war phenomenon that lasts through the 1970s.
