Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is an independent national membership organization and a nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that individual and corporate members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested citizens in the United States and other countries can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments. CFR, which is headquartered in New York\u00a0<\/strong>with an office\u00a0<\/strong>in Washington, DC, does this by: convening meetings where prominent thinkers debate and discuss the major issues of our time; conducting a wide-ranging studies program; publishing\u00a0Foreign Affairs<\/em>, the preeminent journal covering international affairs and U.S. foreign policy; maintaining a diverse membership; sponsoring independent task forces; and providing up-to-date information about the world and U.S. foreign policy on CFR\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>website, cfr.org.<\/p>\n

CFR\u2019s David Rockefeller Studies Program\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is one of the country\u2019s largest foreign policy think tanks. Its widely respected and influential research staff of more than seventy scholars advances the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through their research, writing, and public outreach. CFR\u2019s Global Health Program, established in 2004, seeks to integrate\u2014in both study and in practice\u2014critical issues of global health into U.S. foreign policymaking. Issues include, but are not limited to: emerging infectious diseases (notably HIV\/AIDS and avian flu) and noncommunicable diseases (such as cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer\u2019s), worldwide inequities in life expectancy and maternal mortality, global shortage of health workers, weakness of health systems, and rising threats posed by biological and chemical weapons.<\/p>\n

The Research Associate will work under the direction of Senior Fellow for Global Health Laurie Garrett. Garrett is the only author to have been awarded the three big \u201cPs\u201d in journalism: the Polk, the Peabody, and the Pulitzer. A highly sought after expert on many global health issues, including global health funding, HIV\/AIDS, and biosecurity, Garrett\u2019s work has helped to make CFR a leader in the field of global health and foreign policy.\u00a0The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):<\/strong><\/p>\n
