The recommendations, adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2010, aims ‘to reduce the impact on children of marketing of foods high in saturated fats, trans-fatty acids, free sugars, or salt.’ In light of the current WHO reform process and financial constraints, the fact that WHO member states explicitly chose to develop a ‘Set of Recommendations’ instead of a ‘Code,’ and the similarities between a code and recommendations, this article questions the feasibility and added value of re-opening the issue. Instead it recommends that the Secretariat be supported in their mandate to provide assistance to member states in implementing the existing WHO Set of Recommendations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Is the Timing Right for an International Code of Marketing of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages to Children Rachel Irwin This article addresses recent calls for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to develop a ‘Code of Practice on the Marketing of Unhealthy Food and Beverages to Children.’ The article […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":585,"featured_media":1810,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[151,88],"tags":[153,193,152,396,194,175,192,390],"class_list":["post-1738","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fall-2012-special-issue-human-security-complete-issues","category-most-recent-issue","tag-child-nutrition","tag-food","tag-nutrition","tag-unicef","tag-united-nations-childrens-fund","tag-who","tag-whos-set-of-recommendations-on-the-marketing-of-food-and-non-alcoholic-beverages-to-children","tag-world-health-organization"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1738","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/585"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1738"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1738\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1839,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1738\/revisions\/1839"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1810"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1738"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1738"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/ghg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1738"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
