The NDNP seeks to create an online national database of historically significant newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. The database will be maintained by the Library of Congress (LOC) and freely accessible to the public. Partner organizations will be awarded up to $350,000 over two years to help set up the database. Award recipient responsibilities include:

  • Selecting newspapers to be digitized
  • Digitally converting pages into several formats, preparing optical character recognition files and creating relevant metadata and documentation
  • Delivering content to the LOC within specified guidelines
  • Updating bibliographic records of digitized titles in WorldCat
  • Identifying free-access, online newspapers that have already been digitized
