(This was one of my New Year&#8217;s resolutions.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/deansbookshelf\/files\/2018\/01\/unicrisis-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/deansbookshelf\/files\/2018\/01\/unicrisis-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/deansbookshelf\/files\/2018\/01\/unicrisis-768x538.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/deansbookshelf\/files\/2018\/01\/unicrisis-714x500.jpg 714w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A recurring theme in these posts will be the future of the liberal arts in higher education and at Seton Hall. As I have said publicly on numerous occasions, it is important that we speak confidently and unapologetically about the importance of a liberal education&#8211;an education that fosters critical thinking, creativity, human flourishing, and the common good&#8211;without simply &#8220;preaching to the choir.&#8221; Quite bluntly, we need to a better job of explaining what we do and why ot is relevant.<\/p>\n<p>For this inaugural blog post, I&#8217;m linking to two articles from the <em>Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em> that encourage us to think differently about thinking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www-chronicle-com.ezproxy.shu.edu\/article\/Can-Design-Thinking-Redesign\/241126\">Can Design Thinking Redesign Higher Ed?<\/a> posits &#8220;design thinking&#8221; as an alternative way of doing our collective work as academics, more suited to innovation and problem-solving than the usual meetings. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gv.com\/sprint\/\">Google &#8220;sprint,&#8221;<\/a> anyone?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www-chronicle-com.ezproxy.shu.edu\/article\/A-New-Liberal-Art\/241269\">A New Liberal Art:\u00a0How systems thinking prepares students for a complex world<\/a> suggests that understanding how complex systems work (and fail) is the new &#8220;killer app&#8221; in higher ed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>(Articles are behind a firewall and require either a SHU IP address or that you log in with your SHU credentials.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Comments are welcome<\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the College of Arts and Sciences embarks upon a strategic planning process and contemplates its future, I thought it would be helpful to share articles, books, thought-pieces, blog posts, etc. on higher education that I have found to be enlightening and\/or provocative.
