Fake meat is being developed in labs using stem cells from<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ars.els-cdn.com\/content\/image\/1-s2.0-S2666833521000228-gr4.jpg\" alt=\"Trends and ideas in technology, regulation and public acceptance of cultured meat - ScienceDirect\" width=\"451\" height=\"257\" \/> cows to grow meats that normally produce, which would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/197623\/icode\/\">release CO2<\/a> into the air as a result of being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/animalsandnature\/livestock-feed-is-destroying-the-environment\/\">force-fed<\/a> corn and soybeans. The amount of CO2 emissions would decrease severely if this process were to become the norm in the future. The effect on the agriculture industry and environment would be the\u00a0existence of fewer aquatic <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-981-15-3372-3_17#:~:text=Aquatic%20dead%20zones%20are%20areas,ocean%20and%20stimulates%20algal%20growth.\">dead zones<\/a>. This is because the nutrient runoff from crops (nitrogen and phosphorus) would increase the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-981-15-3372-3_17\">algae<\/a> growth, take oxygen out of the water, and therefore decrease plant growth and decrease biodiversity.<\/p>\n<h1>Pollinators<\/h1>\n<p>Each fall and spring, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/allergies\/pollen_allergies_overview\">25 million Americans<\/a> are affected from the increase in pollen being released in the air. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/allergies-and-the-immune-system\">Reactions<\/a> range from the common cold to developing more chronic illnesses such as asthma, eczema, and hives. But why does this yellow powder-like substance have such a large effect on humans? According to horticulturist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/home\/la-he-healing-garden-allergy-20150627-story.html\">Tom Ogren<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=5367114\">male plants<\/a> are responsible for the majority of pollen outputs as opposed to their female counterparts. The\u00a0immediate response here would be to halt the planting of males and increase female planting, however, this itself would lead to a decrease in biodiversity because it would be more difficult for pollination to occur.<\/p>\n<p>According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, people can be allergic to one type of pollen and not another. The protein in the human body that fights against allergens in the air is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/Tools-for-the-Public\/Allergy,-Asthma-Immunology-Glossary\/Immunoglobulin-E-(IgE)-Defined\">immunoglobulin E<\/a> (IgE) antibody. What if there was a way for humans to synthetically develop a version of this antibody (and the chemical first response \u2013 histamines) that would not produce the outcomes that we normally experience (stuffed nose, cough, sore throat, tearing eyes, etc.)? It would be revolutionary if antibodies can be synthetically grown from each individual\u2019s stem cells to develop antibodies. This could be taken by humans in the form of a one-time pill or vaccine that is specific to the individual\u2019s genetic makeup, leaving no room for side effects of allergies.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/els-jbs-prod-cdn.jbs.elsevierhealth.com\/cms\/attachment\/86b9b645-368a-40b3-ba7d-c319be16e87a\/gr1_lrg.jpg\" alt=\"Delivering Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management (IPPM): Trends in Plant Science\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Gene Drives<\/h1>\n<p>Branching off of this, what would be the effects of scientists genetically engineering species \u2013 plants (for reasons mentioned above), and animals \u2013 on their external environments? This is already occurring in <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wyss-prod.imgix.net\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/22124854\/gene-drives-FAQ-figure-2.png?auto=format\" alt=\"FAQs: Gene Drives\" width=\"297\" height=\"196\" \/>agriculture where farmers are introducing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/gene-drive.html\">gene drives<\/a>, which are genetically engineered genes that canbe used to modify the habits of invasive species that can later be passed down to ultimately remove these species from crops. The use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crisprtx.com\/gene-editing\/crispr-cas9\">CRISPR-Cas9<\/a> gene editing (by using individual bacteria taken from each subject), making this process significantly easier for scientists to perform. If bacteria\/ genes can be taken from individuals of a certain species to be harvested to decrease the infestation of the whole of the invasive species, a possible negative outcome could be needing to re-populate native species that naturally prey on the crops.<\/p>\n<h1>Microbes and the Future of Pandemics<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279387\/\">Microbes<\/a> are living organisms that are all around humans, too small for the naked eye to see. A study done by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biomedcentral.com\/\">Bio Med Central<\/a> in Arctic ice sheets, shows viruses and bacterium are still active in these glaciers after <a href=\"https:\/\/microbiomejournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40168-021-01106-w\">750,000 years<\/a>, proving the point above. Examples of newfound bacteria found within glaciers include <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proteobacteria\"><em>Proteobacteria<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Actinobacteria\"><em>Actinobacteria<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Firmicutes\"><em>Firmicutes<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bacteroidetes\"><em>Bacteroidetes<\/em><\/a>, all of which belong to the same <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phylum\">phylum<\/a>. While these bacteria is not new to humans \u2013 proteobacteria generally found in animal<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/151\/750x445\/1252985.jpg\" alt=\"Arctic shock: Chlamydia bacteria found deep beneath the Arctic ice | Science | News | Express.co.uk\" width=\"385\" height=\"229\" \/> feces, actinobacteria found in soil, firmicutes found on human skin, and Bacteroidetes found in human intestines \u2013 because these bacteria belong to different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourgenome.org\/facts\/what-is-a-genome\">genomes<\/a>, there is a strong chance that there is a genetic variation of these bacteria that humans have not interacted with before. What if there is a way for humans to extract DNA from these microbes to create a synthetically grown antibody? This goes hand in hand with genetically engineering humans\u2019 DNA to create immunity \u2013 something that can be passed down for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Questions to be posed include: <span class=\"TextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">Wh<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">at countries are<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\"> going to be exposed to the never-before-seen microbes and to what extent? Are there specific countries <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">as a whole<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">\u00a0that would suffer the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">most?<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">\u00a0Also, how would these new diseases spread?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">How can we prepare for every mode of contamination? How\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">frequently<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">\u00a0would we expect new diseases to emerge? What is our first line of defense if they occur at the same time<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184678667 BCX0\">?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW184678667 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Climate Change<\/h1>\n<p>Systems and synthetic biology can be used to manage land and agriculture (genetically modifying invasive species). If agricultural workers used this method on a more widespread level\u2014spanning from forests to cities\u2014they would be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/biologydirect.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13062-019-0247-8\">alter<\/a> the carbon cycle. Scientists would be able to take carbon dioxide molecules from highly concentrated areas and remove a portion or remove it altogether (if technology permits). This would create more \u201cclimate control\u201d because it would cause a significant reduction (tens of hundreds of gigatons) of carbon from the atmosphere. On land, genetically modifying plants to reconstruct the photosynthesis process would aid with this altered carbon cycle process. For example, what occurs currently in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/media\/calvincycle\/#:~:text=Background%20Info%20Vocabulary-,The%20Calvin%20cycle%20is%20a%20process%20that%20plants%20and%20algae,food%20autotrophs%20need%20to%20grow.&amp;text=Energy%20to%20fuel%20chemical%20reactions,plants%20have%20captured%20from%20sunlight.\">Calvin cycle<\/a> is carbon fixation (attaching CO2 from the atmosphere to chemical RuBP to begin photosynthesis), the reduction phase (energy reacts with chemicals to create simple sugar G3P), carbohydrate formation, and the regeneration phase (energy and sugar combine to form molecule RuBP, allowing the cycle to be continuous).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.springernature.com\/lw685\/springer-static\/image\/art%3A10.1186%2Fs13062-019-0247-8\/MediaObjects\/13062_2019_247_Fig1_HTML.png\" alt=\"figure1\" width=\"454\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To incorporate synthetic biology to accelerate this process or allow for it to happen on a larger scale (faster, more molecular conversions, etc.), C3 crops\u2014barley, oats, rice, wheat, etc.\u2014 use only the Calvin Cycle to grow, would be <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jxb\/article\/71\/7\/2219\/5736454\">expanded<\/a>. Scientists would be able to take the genetic sequence that allows for photosynthesis to occur by just taking the CO2 from the atmosphere and transplanting this sequence into other plants.
