Lanham, Md: University Press of America.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-94\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/cheb\/files\/2018\/05\/Collins.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" \/>The first chapter gives a history of \u201cAmerican Philosophy in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century\u201d (its \u201cnarrowing of scope\u201d and separation of faith and reason), which is interesting, but the second chapter \u201cTeaching Philosophy in a Catholic University according to John Paul II\u201d is the most relevant. It is an interesting complement to the majority of authors who see theology as the central and unifying science.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Collins &amp; John note that Pope John Paul saw theology as central to a Catholic university, but suggest that philosophy is also important because of its \u201cnatural relationship with theology (and all the other arts and sciences\u201d) p. 29.\u00a0 They relate the teaching of philosophy to seven themes taken from <em>Ex Corde Ecclesiae<\/em>: the search for truth and meaning, the integration of knowledge in research and teaching, the dialog between faith and reason, academic freedom, the moral dimension of academic life, the academic community, and human nature.<\/p>\n<p>They note that \u201cthe search for truth and meaning\u201d requires rigorous thinking and the integration of the disciplines; philosophy is necessary because of \u201cits larger perspective; philosophy studies all things and their interrelationships from the point of view of their ultimate meaning\u201d.\u00a0 The study of philosophy assists students to \u201cemploy their cognitive abilities \u2026 in attaining awareness of objective truth\u201d and that philosophical reason can specifically be applied to faith (p. 31) \u2013 that \u201cfaith needs reason\u201d and \u201creason needs faith\u201d (p. 32).\u00a0 Collins &amp; John insist that philosophy \u201cmust be taught in relationship to theology \u2013 as well as to all the other academic disciplines\u201d (p. 33).<\/p>\n<h4>Questions<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Should one or more philosophy courses be mandatory for all undergraduates?* How might course requirements be revised to accommodate this (especially in the already-crammed science programs).<\/li>\n<li>Is Pieper\u2019s idea (translated and published in 2015 but originally from 1950) to have elements of philosophy taught in all disciplines preferable (or more likely to succeed)?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>*Personal note:\u00a0 the only philosophy course I had as an undergraduate (in a small secular university) was a hefty two-semester \u201csurvey\u201d course. In retrospect, I understood little and forgot even more.\u00a0 One thing that stuck in my memory was \u201cI think, therefore I am\u201d, largely because a clever student drew a lively picture of the professor\u2019s long-haired dog and captioned it \u201cI stink, therefore I am\u201d.\u00a0 While Descartes cogito is not a bad thing to remember, it scarcely does justice to a \u201ccourse in philosophy\u201d \u2013 the main problem being that what I learned was not applied or reinforced anywhere else.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Collins, P.
