{"id":772,"date":"2014-10-27T16:39:40","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T20:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/?p=772"},"modified":"2017-07-26T14:31:43","modified_gmt":"2017-07-26T18:31:43","slug":"annual-accountabiltiy-almanacs-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/2014\/10\/annual-accountabiltiy-almanacs-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual Accountability &#8211; Almanacs in Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever imagined living in another time and place?\u00a0 Finding out more about daily routines in the course of recorded history through the words of historians who chronicle the story of human experience are invaluable to the present day reader.\u00a0 Another useful aid is a publication(s) from the actual time period which documents the doings\u00a0of a person, place, or object\u00a0first hand.\u00a0 With this in mind, and more specifically, materials that allow for personal reference\u00a0from an annual perspective such as\u00a0directories, yearbooks, and most notably almanacs provide the researcher with useful data to learn from by word and number alike.<\/p>\n<p>An &#8220;almanac&#8221; (or\u00a0&#8220;almanack&#8221; or &#8220;almanach&#8221; as they are sometimes referred to) by definition is an annual publication that provides weather forecasts, tide rates, astronomical data, and other relevant information in tabular form.\u00a0 Modern day almanacs have evolved to include various statistical and descriptive information such as economics, government, religion, and political results\u00a0among other subject areas that touch not only upon local communities, but national and world issues in brief\u00a0line item and\/or summary form.\u00a0 The earliest known almanac published in the &#8220;modern sense&#8221; was\u00a0the <i>Almanac of Azarqueil<\/i> written in 1088 by Ab\u016b Ish\u0101q Ibr\u0101h\u012bm, al-Zarq\u0101l\u012b in Toledo, al-Andalus.\u00a0 There have been several\u00a0subsequent examples from here as found in different countries, languages, and specializations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2014\/10\/img087A1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-790\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2014\/10\/img087A1.jpg\" alt=\"The Gentleman and Citizen's Almanack\" width=\"311\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2014\/10\/img087A1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2014\/10\/img087A1-184x300.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 85vw, 311px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0example of an international almanac found\u00a0in our collection can be\u00a0located in our rare book collection if you\u00a0look back\u00a0280 years ago at a far different world than the one of today.\u00a0 This volume entitled:\u00a0\u00a0<em>The Gentleman and Citizen\u2019s Almanack, For the Year of Our Lord (<\/em>Dublin: S.
