Seton Hall University contains a number of libraries across its three campuses including the Walsh Library, Interprofessional Health Sciences Library, Valente Italian Library, Turro Seminary Library and Law Library.\u00a0 The Walsh Library also houses the Department of Archives and Special Collections and the Walsh Gallery which care for rare books, manuscripts, art and artifacts and hosts spaces for exhibitions, programs and displays.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The book featured in this post, \u201cFar Away and Long Ago\u201d by William Henry Hudson, recollects the author\u2019s early life, between the ages of four and twelve, which were spent in Argentina.\u00a0 It is part of the Rare Book<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4107\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/William-Henry-Hudson-Image.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4107\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/William-Henry-Hudson-Image-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Image of William Henry Hudson\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/William-Henry-Hudson-Image-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/William-Henry-Hudson-Image.jpg 423w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 85vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portrait of William Henry Hudson by Ra\u00fal Rosarivo from \u201cFar Away and Long Ago\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Collection, housed in the Department of Archives and Special Collections. This limited-edition book had a run of just fifteen hundred copies and was designed by Alberto Kraft.\u00a0 The volume in the Seton Hall Archives is signed by Kraft and illustrator Ra\u00fal Rosarivo.\u00a0 This edition is bound in cowhide with undressed leather on the lower portion and features laced edges. <a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0 The materials used in the binding reflect William Henry Hudson\u2019s childhood, much of which was spent in the rugged pampas of Argentina, where his parents raised sheep, though the region is known for its free-ranging cattle.\u00a0 These formative experiences in nature would profoundly impact his future.\u00a0 As an adult, Hudson would achieve recognition as an author, naturalist, and ornithologist.\u00a0 He was lauded for his exotic romances, especially \u201cGreen Mansions\u201d which was published in 1904.\u00a0 \u201cFar Away and Long Ago\u201d lovingly recounts his childhood \u2014 roaming the pampas at liberty, studying the plant and animal life, and observing both natural and human phenomena on the harsh frontier.\u00a0 At age 15, he suffered an illness which would impact his health adversely for the remainder of his life.\u00a0 Around this period of infirmity, he read Charles Darwin\u2019s \u201cOrigin of Species\u201d which reaffirmed his interest in the natural world.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4108\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/Raul-Rosarivo-Illustration.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4108\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/Raul-Rosarivo-Illustration-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of a man by Ra\u00fal Rosarivo from \u201cFar Away and Long Ago\u201d\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/Raul-Rosarivo-Illustration-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/Raul-Rosarivo-Illustration.jpg 387w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 85vw, 236px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Illustration by Ra\u00fal Rosarivo from \u201cFar Away and Long Ago\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though William Henry Hudson may not be a household name today, he had many admirers in his time.\u00a0 In 1934, renowned author Ernest Hemingway wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2013\/05\/ernest_hemingways_reading_list_for_a_young_writer_1934.html\">a list of book recommendations<\/a> to a young, aspiring writer. It included William Henry Hudson\u2019s \u201cFar Away and Long Ago\u201d in addition to books by celebrated authors such as Stephen Crane, e.e. cummings, Leo Tolstoy, Emily Bronte, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and James Joyce.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a>\u00a0 Hudson\u2019s book was also among the objects auctioned from <em>The Private Collection of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan<\/em> at Christie\u2019s auction house in 2016.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0 Praise for Hudson\u2019s writing consistently mentions his palpable imagery, as was noted in this thoughtful review on amazon.com:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cThis book was like knocking on an old friend\u2019s door, being welcomed in <\/em><em>and settling in front of a fire with a glass of something in one&#8217;s hand. <\/em><em>The author then talks, gently and beautifully, weaving this picture of his early life. <\/em><em>He brings his characters to life and describes the birds and other creatures <\/em><em>so well, I felt as if I was there with him, every time I picked up the book to read. <\/em><em>A gentle lovely story of a young boy&#8217;s steps from childhood.\u201d \u2013 L.M.
