{"id":4045,"date":"2021-02-09T11:50:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T16:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/?p=4045"},"modified":"2021-02-09T12:33:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T17:33:48","slug":"bayley-hall-the-grammar-school-of-setonia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/2021\/02\/bayley-hall-the-grammar-school-of-setonia\/","title":{"rendered":"Bayley Hall \u2013 The Grammar School of Setonia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In respect of the recent commemoration of National Catholic Schools Week, Seton Hall has a long and honored tradition of hosting countless students who have their academic roots in parochial-sponsored classrooms across New Jersey and around the world.\u00a0 Our institution is no exception to showing its support of pre-secondary level education.\u00a0 Between 1901 and the late 1920s, Seton Hall established the Bayley Hall Grammar School initiative to help students prepare for more advanced study with anticipation that pupils would better continue their educational journey at the Preparatory Academy and College in subsequent semesters.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by Msgr. John A. Stafford, President, the following overview is the first notice of the school with the details extracted from the 1901 <em>Seton Hall College Catalogue<\/em> and signaled a renewed look at youth-centered instruction after the school attained its first accreditation status four years previous . . .<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4049\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/bayley-hall-1673-e1612889105244-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/bayley-hall-1673-e1612889105244-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/bayley-hall-1673-e1612889105244-1024x832.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/bayley-hall-1673-e1612889105244-768x624.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/bayley-hall-1673-e1612889105244-1200x975.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/bayley-hall-1673-e1612889105244.jpg 1357w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 85vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Over time, the Bayley Hall Grammar School received consistent support and regularly hosted an average of 40-50 students per academic year.\u00a0 Over its approximately three decades in operation, the school prospered and by the mid-1920s, the description of the school touted its accomplishments, but also provided full disclosure in their approach in print as the following notice from the 1924 <em>Seton Hall College Catalogue<\/em> was heralded within its pages at a time when the institution was male-only and highly structured in almost every manner . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBAYLEY HALL GRAMMAR SCHOOL &#8211; CHARACTER AND PURPOSE . . . in the few years of its existence has won for itself a position second to none among the preparatory institutions of the country.\u00a0 It has its origin in the realization, forced on the President year after year, that many of the students who sought admission to the High School were, in some one or other of the required studies, inadequately prepared.\u00a0 It was evident that a department which should take students at an earlier age and give them a thorough grammar school course would not only serve a useful purpose in itself, but would in addition facilitate the more difficult work of the High School.\u00a0 This ideal has been fully realized.\u00a0 The graduates of Bayley Hall have, almost without exception, demonstrated by their work in the High School the need and the value of the training given them in the preparatory department.<\/p>\n<p>Such an institution has, of course, to struggle against the difficulties which inevitably arise when boys are for the first time taken from parents and home.\u00a0 And it is in this particular that Bayley Hall has achieved its greatest success. The occupations of every hour have been so apportioned that mind and body are given useful work and healthy play from the morning bell at half-past is to the last bell at half-past eight.\u00a0 Periods of recreation alternate with periods of study; every species of athletics is encourages, and every means is employed to develop a sound mind in a sound body.\u00a0 One of the Reverend Fathers, resident in Bayley Hall, immediately supervises the work in this section.\u00a0 The discipline is firm, as discipline must always be; but harshness is never permitted to mar the relations of teacher and pupil.\u00a0 As in the other departments of the institution, the development of the moral character is looked upon as equally important with the acquisition of knowledge; and no pains are spared to lay the foundations of that combination of culture and religious virtue which constitutes the Christian gentlemen.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4047\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4047\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4047\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/02\/bayley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"304\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Roosevelt Bayley (1814-1877)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The school building was named in honor of James Roosevelt Bayley (1814-1872), the first Bishop of Newark and hosted the Grammar School, hence the name of the institute and separate from the College proper.\u00a0 As further described in the catalogues of the era: \u201cThe study-hall, class rooms, reading and recreation rooms, and dormitories are all neatly and tastefully furnished, and everything tends to foster in the minds of the young a desire to cultivate habits of cleanliness and neatness in keeping with their surroundings.\u201d\u00a0 Aside from the well-appointed surroundings, the model of having classes in one space led to consistency and a logical pattern of instruction.\u00a0 The following synopses provide the typical path of pedagogy found among the first three years encountered by the Bayley Hall student of yore . . .<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FIRST GRADE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ENGLISH.\u00a0 Grammar Reviewed; Punctuation; Elementary Precepts of Composition; Forms of Style.<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE.\u00a0 Reading of Masterpieces in Prose and Verse; Spelling; Studies in Critical Analysis; Memory Work.<\/p>\n<p>ELOCUTION.\u00a0 Special Exercises.<\/p>\n<p>SCIENCE.\u00a0 Physiology and Hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>ARITHMETIC.\u00a0 Advanced Arithmetic Completed and Reviewed; Business Forms.<\/p>\n<p>GEOGRAPHY.\u00a0 The United States and Territories.<\/p>\n<p>HISTORY.\u00a0 Elementary General History.<\/p>\n<p>CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE.<\/p>\n<p>OPTIONAL SUBJECTS.\u00a0 Music, Drawing, German, French, Stenography, Type-writing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SECOND GRADE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ENGLISH. \u00a0Grammar Completed; Prosody; Description and Narration.<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE.\u00a0 Selections in Poetry; Spelling and Analysis; Studies in Figures:\u00a0Memory Work.<\/p>\n<p>READING AND WRITING.\u00a0 Bi-Weekly Exercises.<\/p>\n<p>ARITHMETIC .\u00a0 Continued; Mental Work.<\/p>\n<p>GEOGRAPHY.\u00a0 Asia, Africa, South America.<\/p>\n<p>HISTORY.\u00a0 United States History Completed.<\/p>\n<p>CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE.<\/p>\n<p>OPTIONAL SUBJECTS.\u00a0 Music, Drawing, German, French, Stenography, Type-Writing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>THIRD GRADE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ENGLISH.\u00a0 Grammar, Etymology Reviewed; Sentences; Essentials of Syntax: Letter Writing; Elementary Composition.<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE.\u00a0 Selections in Prose; Spelling and Analysis; Studies in Etymology and Use of Words; Word Formation.<\/p>\n<p>READING AND WRITING.\u00a0 Special Exercises.<\/p>\n<p>ARITHMETIC.
