{"id":3606,"date":"2020-11-03T10:28:39","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T15:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/?p=3606"},"modified":"2020-11-03T10:28:39","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T15:28:39","slug":"all-saints-all-souls-days-early-texts-from-the-rare-book-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/2020\/11\/all-saints-all-souls-days-early-texts-from-the-rare-book-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"All Saints &amp;; All Souls Days \u2013 Early Texts from the Rare Book Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The liturgical commemorations that distinguish the feast days of All Saints (November 1<sup>st<\/sup>) and All Souls (November 2<sup>nd<\/sup>) that are both important times of reflection and veneration by many adherents who believe in the spirit of Christianity.\u00a0 Along with iconography and dedicated prayers, the most evident means of honoring the memories of those who came before us can be found in the bibliographic record created over time.\u00a0 This encompasses various accounts, sermons, pronouncements, and legacies of innumerable individuals have recorded relevant declarations throughout the past several centuries and preserved for the ages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3612\" style=\"width: 311px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3612\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-4751-e1604416862230-180x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"518\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calendar of Holy Days for November Including All Saints and All Souls, 1723<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Within the Monsignor William No\u00e9 Field Archives &amp; Special Collections Center, a number of theological-based volumes have been collected by our past and present clergy that honor the prayers of the faithful along with titles on individual saints who have been memorialized over time.\u00a0 All Saints Day (or All Hallow\u2019s Day) is a time of dedicated solemnity to honor all blessed individuals who have attained canonization especially blessed individuals who do not have their own respective feast day within the calendar.\u00a0 The start of formal celebrations in regard to sainthood possibly began in Antioch and the inspiration for present day commemoration of November 1<sup>st<\/sup> as the Feast of All Saints was first documented by 800 AD within such manuscripts as the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrology_of_Tallaght\">Martyrology of Tallaght<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%93engus_of_Tallaght\">Martyrology of \u00d3engus<\/a> <\/em>from \u00c9ire and spread forward to Bavaria, Nothumbria (England), the Frankish Kingdom (a day of total obligation even prior to its emergence as part of the Holy Roman Empire) along its present-day presence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3608\" style=\"width: 312px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3608\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661-743x1024.jpg 743w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661-768x1058.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661-1115x1536.jpg 1115w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661-1486x2048.jpg 1486w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661-1200x1653.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/11\/souls-8755-e1604416829661.jpg 1559w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 312px) 85vw, 312px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First page of the Sermones de t(em)p(or)e et de sanctis: cu(m) omelijs Beati Bernardi Abbatis Clareualle(n)s(is) (1495)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When it comes to individual titles on those canonized located in our stacks, the oldest text devoted to a saint is a compilation of sermons and devotions created by Bernard of Clarivoux. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153 AD) was a native of Burgundy and spent his life as a monastic abbot within the Order of Cistercians (Trappists).\u00a0 He later became the first Cistercian placed on the Christian Calendar of Saints and was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canonized\">canonized<\/a>\u00a0on January 18, 1174 and over half a century later was bestowed with the title: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doctor_of_the_Church\">Doctor of the Church<\/a>&#8221; in honor of his contributions to the faith.\u00a0 The volume that celebrates his legacy found within our collection is entitled (in the Latin): <em>Sermones de t(em)p(or)e et de sanctis: cu(m) omelijs Beati Bernardi Abbatis Clareualle(n)s(is) ordinis Cisterciensis; [Call Number: BXZ2184.N34162 1723] written by <a href=\"https:\/\/setonhall.on.worldcat.org\/search?queryString=au%3DNakatenus%2C%20Wilhelm&amp;databaseList=283&amp;translateSearch=false&amp;expandSearch=true&amp;clusterResults=on\">Wilhelm Nakatenus<\/a>, S.J.\u00a0 Reverend Nakatenus (1617-1582) was a Jesuit priest, author and preacher who is considered \u201cone of the important prayer book authors of modern times\u201d by several theologians throughout the years.
