This was a typical greeting shared by Pope Saint John Paul II whose words and outreach touched millions of individuals around the world during his lifetime and beyond.\u00a0 This week marks a milestone for the local community when Pope Saint John Paul II visited the Eastern United States between October 4-8, 1995 with a special excursion to Newark and surrounding communities during the first two days of this much anticipated spiritual pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3494\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3494\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380-776x1024.jpg 776w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380-768x1013.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380-1165x1536.jpg 1165w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380-1553x2048.jpg 1553w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380-1200x1583.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-d052-scaled-e1601995203380.jpg 1941w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 85vw, 266px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover of the Catholic Advocate heralding the arrival of Pope Saint John Paul II &#8211; October 4, 1995<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The choice to visit Newark was well-summarized by Mr. Jerry Filteau, a columnist for the <em>National Catholic Reporter<\/em> who offered the following prospectus for those unfamiliar with the deep-rooted diversity found within the city and surrounding communities:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNewark viewed as place of hope,\u201d In visiting the Newark Archdiocese, Oct. 4 and 5, Pope John Paul II will find a microcosm of the church and the nation . . . the archdiocese has 11 distinct offices just for racial and ethnic apostolates &#8212; Hispanics, African-Americans, Chinese, Filipinos, Haitians, Irish, Italians, Koreans, Poles, Portuguese and Vietnamese.\u00a0 The Newark Archdiocese\u2019s Catholics are the local teachers and retail clerks, police and meat cutters, homemakers and shop owners.\u00a0 They\u2019re the airline employees, truckers, railroad workers, shippers and dockworkers of Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth and Bayonne, one of the nation\u2019s busiest transportation hubs. They\u2019re the professionals and corporate executives who live in affluent Bergen County suburbs . . . \u201c<\/p>\n<p>In regard to the first chapter of the journey, Pope Saint John Paul II arrived at the Newark International Airport and met with various dignitaries prior to his first major talk before the United Nations General Assembly as a prelude to his day of activities in the \u201cBrick City\u2019 and environs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3493\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-a049-1-e1601995186527-296x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-a049-1-e1601995186527-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-a049-1-e1601995186527-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-a049-1-e1601995186527.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 261px) 85vw, 261px\" \/>The morning of October 5<sup>th<\/sup> Pope Saint John Paul II celebrated Mass at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford before 85,000 individuals where Pope Saint John Paul II in his homily expressed those present and millions watching on television that \u201cToday we are celebrating the Good News of God\u2019s Kingdom here in Giants Stadium, in the Archdiocese of Newark in New Jersey \u2013 \u2018The Garden State\u2019 . . . \u201c which was greeted with enthusiastic applause.\u00a0 Moreover, he reminded the assembly of the ways in which the church has \u201cmade a home\u201d in this country, embracing people of many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Pope Saint John Paul II delivered his sermon during an unforeseen downpour in which he quipped to the assemblage that: \u201cI see the people of New Jersey know how to praise God in joyful praise and song, even in the rain.\u201d . . . \u201cwater drenched faithful that \u201cwater is a sign of life, a sign of God\u2019s blessing!\u201d\u00a0 This provided a graceful note upon which to end the ceremony and inspire the crowd.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3496 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-a049-e1601995165486-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-a049-e1601995165486-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/10\/jpii-1995-a049-e1601995165486.jpg 663w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 85vw, 206px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That evening, Pope Saint John Paul II celebrated evening prayer at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart located in downtown Newark.
