Jean Shepherd &#8211; &#8220;A Christmas Story&#8221; of Setonia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seton Hall has long built\u00a0a tradition of marking the\u00a0Christmas season in varied ways including observance of Advent,\u00a0Midnight\u00a0Mass, a live Nativity Scene\u00a0and in recent years the ceremonial tree lighting have brought the community together in celebration of the season. \u00a0Among the most memorable traditions found\u00a0in the early days of school history included an annual musical Christmas program(me) which showcased the theatrical talents, voices, and instrumental prowess of the student body. \u00a0Included here are examples of the entertainment fare offered to the audiences who were there to share good\u00a0cheer\u00a0which did not always offer traditional carols, but rather an eclectic mix of different song titles and themes designed to entertain and inspire those in attendance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1252\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-1.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas entertainment by the students of Seton Hall College\" width=\"271\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-1.jpg 949w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-1-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-1-796x1024.jpg 796w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 85vw, 271px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1253\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-2.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas program\" width=\"461\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-2.jpg 2167w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-2-1024x615.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 461px) 85vw, 461px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, it was in 1930 and the yule-time production of &#8220;The Late Cap&#8217;t Crow&#8221; where the first documented appearance of a Pirate on the shores of Setonia came about as shown in the pages of <i>The Setonian <\/i>around four months prior to the adoption of the legendary school\u00a0nickname. \u00a0Santa Claus would share space on campus with the Pirates from this time forward.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-8986.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1257\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-8986.jpg\" alt=\"Setonian News\" width=\"575\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-8986.jpg 1455w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-8986-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-8986-1024x579.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 85vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over subsequent Christmas celebrations more traditional holiday-themed events took place after World War II\u00a0such as traditional holiday\u00a0parties, concerts, and the\u00a0like would become more commonplace. \u00a0The true spirit and meaning of\u00a0Christmas is timeliness for many people. \u00a0This not only present in a religious sense, but also in popular culture circles. \u00a0For example, how many of us have ever\u00a0watched the movie\u00a0&#8220;A Christmas Story&#8221; and saw\u00a0Ralphie&#8217;s quest for the Red Ryder B-B Gun while\u00a0being roundly warned &#8211; &#8220;You&#8217;ll Shoot Your Eye Out Kid!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0This endearing tale is not only popular among Setonians, but also the wider world through the pen of legendary writer and raconteur Jean Shepherd who not only narrated this movie, but\u00a0wrote this treatment based on his early life under the original title &#8211; &#8220;<i>In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.&#8221; \u00a0<\/i>Shepherd was an<i>\u00a0<\/i>author, television, and radio personality who had a popular show\u00a0on W-O-R radio in New York City\u00a0for a number of years between the 1950s-70s and\u00a0made regular appearances on the Seton Hall campus (including a mid-December gig in 1965 as heralded below)\u00a0during these years in the limelight whose time on campus are still remembered fondly by those who saw him in concert. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com\/comedy\/jean-shepherd-show\/the-jean-shepherd-show-65-12-15-a-college-tune-on-the-jews-harp\">Please click here to listen in on Jean Shepherd announce his date at Seton Hall on 12\/16\/1965<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-10988.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1254\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/12\/xmas-10988.jpg\" alt=\"Jean Shepherd-Dec. 16;
