Three Minute Leadership- One Second Every Day

To: The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning

In his recent TED broadcast, Cesar Kuriyama, film director, discusses his recent project, One Second Every Day. Introducing his project he says: : “Basically I’m recording one second of every day of my life for the rest of my life, chronologically compiling these one-second tiny slices of my life into one single continuous video until, you know, I can’t record them anymore.” His purpose was to remember events from the days of his life and not lose them, to capture memories – brief, visual moments from each precious day. And early learning for him was that if he wasn’t doing anything interesting, he would forget to take the video. He found early on that on days when nothing interesting was happening, he would forget to record his one second video. Missing that one second was a valuable lesson.

His life would change. Knowing that he was going to capture ‘something’ each day (a scene, person, event, activity) heightened his awareness of everything around him and, more importantly, what he would bring to each day. Waking up each morning with the thought that he would record one second of his life that day sharpened his focus on life. His message to great leaders: “I encourage you all to record just a small snippet of your life every day, so you can never forget that that day, you lived.”

Reflect for a moment on what a one hour video encapsulating ten years of your life would look like. Some memories would be vivid, others hazy and yet other forgotten. And in this is our learning – to live vibrantly each moment of the 86,400 seconds that each day brings us – with joy, passion, excitement purpose. Remember the words of Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Prize-winning poet: ”The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.” Make each moment the best of our life. Life is so very good. And have fun doing it.

Have a beautiful day and a fantastic week!!!
