Three Minute Leadership: What a Well-Tuned Piano Teaches Us
To: The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning
A friend, a lover of great music, told me recently how Frederic Chopin’s piano music enables the pianist to create a rich orchestra out of the piano. His face lit up as he spoke of how the piano – and its tuning – was developed so that its acoustics take advantage of temperament, overtones and harmonics. “If you hit one key on a well-tuned piano,” he said, “you will see and hear many strings vibrate throughout the instrument.” What a magnificent metaphor for great leaders in their professional and personal life – if everything is fine-tuned, the result will be a ripple effect of harmony across the other parts. Herman Melville, author, captured this thought is his words: “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.”
It is this beautiful and wondrous connectivity that great leaders inspire and bring to the world and the people whom they touch that creates the magic and rhapsody of their magnificent music – the singular note that “vibrates throughout the instrument.” Be that finely-tuned, exciting and passionate leader who creates a rich orchestra from a humble piano. Be the author who establishes the connectivity of ideas, events and people. Let your passion and love of life be the chord that fills your life and the lives of those you serve… because you choose to be more than you ever dreamed you could be… and more… so much more. And have fun doing it. Life is so very beautiful.
Have a beautiful day and a magnificent week!!!
