Group Mentoring, Group 5 Session 1

By: Micaela Tremblay, Leadership Class of 2016

The first Group Mentoring session for Leadership sophomore, Zachary Blackwood occurred on September 27. The meeting began with the question: What will the future of the United States look like over the next 5,10, 20 years? Is there anything for us to be afraid of? Being talented and bright students, is there anything for us to fear in the future? Our key takeaways regarding these questions are:

  • Can’t be afraid, have to be free to risk everything
  • Live in the moment
  • Trust your instincts,  and they will improve over time
  • Mike: Plans don’t always happen the way we want
  • Dan: Define what you want to do.
    • Greatest fear is Fear of Success
    • Need passion and purpose in life
    • Set Yourself Apart from others in the job market
      • Dan: Fact is the job placement after college is decreasing
      • Stay focused
      • Ability to sense others cues and be empathic
      • Be able to work in a group, have values (set apart from others) that employers are craving
        • Takes a team, not one person
        • Need humility, authenticity, don’t need old fashion regal CEOs
        • Everyday Goals
          • There is no effort without error
          • At the end of the day, know that you gave your best
          • Embrace the breakdowns, to get to the breakthrough
          • Think what is this situation trying to teach me? and then learn from it.
          • Which is better: smaller, more focused goals, or 1 far reaching long term goal?
            • Make attainable standards
            • Be flexible
              • You don’t know where life is going to take you. It is good to have goals, but be open to opportunities.
              • Distinction between Goals and Dreams
                • Achievable goals that grow into dreams
                • Break goals down to measurable degree in order to feel successful
                • Good Interviewing Skills
                  • It is the soft skills that set you apart
                    • About presence, confidence
  • Write well, speak well, know yourself
  • Be positive and confident
  • Body language is very important
  • Embrace opportunities
  • I’mpossible
  • What would Mike Say?
  • Bold Requests
    • Look for opportunities, something that someone said, be gutsy and step over your comfort zone. Say what you want to say
    • Seton Hall Bucket List
      • Start thinking of bold requests, make bold requests of yourself and others
      • Worst case scenario: they say no and you’re back at where you are
  • No pattern of success, the world is telling us what is successful, can’t let that define us
    • You must determine what is successful
