Group Mentoring
The Leadership Team participates in monthly Group Mentoring sessions with executives from various coroporations. Each session consists of about 6 students and 3 executives. Below, Matthew Askin, Class of 2014, captures a summary of last week’s session with his group.
- We agreed that one of the best ways to leverage the real world experience of our mentors would be to focus on pragmatic skills, such as interviewing.
- Focus was placed on areas where the inside perspective of mentors would be helpful, for example how to construct a resume that will stand out.
- Students agreed that more intangible elements of mentor experience were also significant, i.e. how did it feel to be searching for a real job, how did you deal with making a mistake, etc.
- The group affirmed the great value of having diverse mentors. Those far along in their careers bring the profound conceptual knowledge necessary to great leadership going forward, while those less removed from their academic experiences bring a perspective on how to achieve more proximate success, i.e. what you need to know now.
