Microsoft SharePoint Online (sites), a part of Office 365, allows you to store, sync, and share your content.

Creating a Microsoft SharePoint Site: Illustrated Guide:
Microsoft SharePoint Sites – Student Guide

  1. Start by opening a web browser and going to: http://www.shu.edu and select the PirateNet link in the upper right corner
  2. Select the Student Email button
  3. Enter your Seton Hall University shortname (smithjoh) and password
  4. Your Office365 page will default to display your eMail
  5. Select the Sites link in the Office365 navigation bar
  6. The default SharePoint page will list the SharePoint Sites that you are following
    Please note the following:

    1. Files stored on your Microsoft SharePoint Sites count against your 25GB SkyDrive Pro quota.
    2. If you have not activated your SkyDrive Pro space, selecting “Sites” will activate your SkyDrive Pro space
  7. To create a SharePoint Site, select the Site contents link from the settings (gear symbol) menu
  8. The Site Contents page is divided into two sections:
    Lists, Libraries, and other Apps
    Subsites
  9. To create a new Subsite, select the + new subsite link at the bottom of the page
  10. Complete the New SharePoint Site wizard, specifying the Title and Web Site Address of your SharePoint Site
    1. In the User Permission section, select the “Use Unique Permission” option
    2. In the Navigation option, select YES (Display this site on the top link bar of Parent site?)
    3. In the Navigation Inheritance option, select NO (Use the top link bar from parent site?)
  11. Select the Create button
  12. Your new SharePoint Site will appear under the “Sites I’m following” column

Microsoft Lync

Microsoft Lync

Microsoft Lync, a part of Office 365, supports synchronous collaboration (chat, audio, or video call), video conferencing, and screen sharing.

Students can download the Microsoft Lync desktop client from their Office 365 page. Note that the Lync desktop client is pre-installed on Seton Hall University laptops with Office 2013

Downloading the Microsoft Lync Desktop Client

The Microsoft Lync Desktop Client can be downloaded from your Office365 page.

  1. Start by opening a web browser and going to: http://www.shu.edu and select the PirateNet link in the upper right corner
  2. Select the Student Email button
  3. Enter your Seton Hall University shortname (smithjoh) and password
  4. Your Office365 page will default to display your eMail
  5. Select the Office 365 settings link in settings menu (gear symbol in the upper right corner)
  6. On the Office 365 settings page, select the software link
  7. Select Lync from the menu on the left, then select the install button.
    A small *.exe file will start to download. Run this file to install the Microsoft Lync desktop client.
  8. The Microsoft Lync software will start to install on your laptop

 

Setting up the Microsoft Lync Desktop Client

The Microsoft Lync Desktop Client will authenticate against your PirateNet credentials.

  1. If the Lync desktop client does not automatically launch, manually launch the program from:
    1. Windows 7
      1. Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office 2013 > Lync 2013
    2. Windows 8
      1. Windows 8 Start Screen > Lync 2013 tile
  2. When the Microsoft Lync software is launched, you will be prompted to sign-in.
    1. You may see a pop-up. Select the Accept button to accept the Microsoft Office License Agreement and proceed.
    2. You may see an “Activate Office” pop-up. Enter your shortname@shu.edu in the email field, select Next.  In the password field, enter your PirateNet password and select Sign In.
  3. In the Sign-in address: field, enter your shortname@shu.edu
    In the Password: field, enter your PirateNet password
    Select the Sign in button at the bottom of the window
  4. Your name will be displayed at the top of the Lync window.
  5. In the Find Someone field, enter a name to locate others at Seton Hall University who are using Lync

SkyDrive Pro – Students – Windows 8 Desktop (pdf)

The SkyDrive Pro Client for Windows (pre-installed with Office 2013), available for download from the Microsoft website, will allow users to have direct access to documents stored on their SkyDrive Pro account from the desktop environment.

  1. The Windows SkyDrive Pro Client for Windows is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center.

  2. Select the SkyDrivePro_x86_en-us.exe checkbox, then select the Next button
  3. Once downloaded, locate the SkyDrivePro_x86_en-us.exe installation file in your Downloads folder, double click on the file to install the SkyDrive Pro Sync Client.
    The SkyDrive Pro 2013 application has the two small blue clouds icon.
  4. Open a web browser and sign into your first.last@student.shu.edu email account, then select the SkyDrive tab.
  5. Select the Sync button at the upper right corner of the page, located just below your name.
    • If you are not using a Seton Hall University issued computer, a Sign in prompt will appear.
      Enter your username@shu.edu and then select the Next button
    • Enter your PirateNet Password, then select the Sign in button
  6. The SkyDrive Pro Sync Client will start to sync your files.
  7. Select the Show my files… button to complete the SkyDrive Pro Sync Client setup.
  8. A SkyDrive Pro folder will be added to your “Favorites” area in the Windows File Explorer.

SkyDrive Pro – Students – Windows 8 Modern UI (pdf)

  2. Once installed, launch the Windows 8 Modern UI SkyDrive Pro app
  3. The first time that you launch the SkyDrive Pro app, select the Sign In button
  4. Enter your Seton Hall University shortname@shu.edu and PirateNet password, then select OK
  5. Your SkyDrive Pro files will be displayed. To upload files, Right-click or swipe up from the bottom edge to reveal the app bar and select the Upload button. To update your password, swipe in from the right edge to display the Charms bar, select Settings, and then Select Options.

  1. Log into your first.last@student.shu.edu web based email. This is also your Office365 Page.  Select the SkyDrive link in the navigation bar. (This is actually a link to SkyDrive Pro)
  2. Once the Activation process is initiated, your Microsoft SkyDrive Pro account should be ready to use in just a few minutes.  Please note that this process may take up to half an hour
  3. When prompted, select OK to get started.
  4. When the Activation process is completed, Your SkyDrive Pro Library will be displayed.

Lenovo Helix – Mail Tile | Student Email

The Mail Tile on the Windows 8 Start Screen can be configured to read first.last@student.shu.edu student email.

  1. From the Windows 8 Start screen, select the Mail tile
  2. Swipe from the right edge to display the Charms bar, select Settings
  3. Select Accounts
  4. Select Add an account
  5. Select the Exchange Active Sync option
  6. Enter your eMail address (first.last@student.shu.edu) and your PirateNet password, then select the See all link
  7. Enter the following information:
    Server Address: m.outlook.com
    Domain: outlook.com/student.shu.edu
    Username: shortname@shu.edu
    Select Connect
  8. Your email account will take a few minutes to synchronize.
    If this is the first time that you are connecting your @student.shu.edu email, you will see a prompt to accept remote administration – Select yes or ok
    Additionally, you may see a yellow bar at the top of the window – accept all prompts that appear

If you get a prompt to “fix” your account, select the “Fix It” link.  This will open a new web page.  Complete any empty fields in the form on the Microsoft Website, and click Save or Submit at the bottom of the page.

The page may then display a ‘can not connect’ error – simply exit out of the browser and select the Mail tile again.  In place of the the “Fix It” link will be a link to “Sign In Again” – select this link and refer to the directions above.

Lenovo Helix – TrackPad Sensitivity

The TouchPad (TrackPad) Sensitivity level can be adjusted to set the required finger pressure before the TouchPad responds from “Light Touch” to “Heavy Touch”. For individuals who prefer to exclusively use an external mouse, the TrackPoint and TrackPad can be individually turned off.

  1. From the Start Screen, type Control Panel to initiate a search for the Windows Control Panel. Select the Control Panel item to launch the Control Panel
  2. Open the Mouse control panel item.
    (If you see a list of 8 categories rather than a listing of control panel items, select the “Large Icons” option from the View By: pull-down menu at the top right of the Control Panel window)
  3. Select the ThinkPad tab, then select the Settings… button on the TouchPad side of the window
  4. Expand the Pointing menu, then select the Touch Sensitivity item. The Touch Sensitivity slider will allow you to adjust how much finger pressure is required before the TouchPad responds

Lenovo Helix – Front Facing Camera

The front facing web camera on the Lenovo Helix was set to “off” by Lenovo when the devices were shipped to customers.

The front facing camera can be turned on via the Lenovo Settings Windows 8 app.

  1. From the Start Screen, type Lenovo to initiate a search for the Lenovo Settings app
  2. Select the Camera section of the Lenovo Settings app
  3. From the pull-down menu just below the View camera preview window, select the Front-facing camera
  4. Select Normal to enable the front-facing camera

Note: It may be necessary to update the Lenovo Settings app before being able to edit the front-facing camera settings.  The Lenovo Settings app can be downloaded from the Windows 8 Store.
