An example of an uploaded article- Studying the HIV-1 Transgenic Rat

Here is an example of an article (pdf format) that I uploaded.  It is an article on some of the experimental work that I have done with my colleagues to better understand the effect of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus  (HIV-1) on the brain.  The virus does its thing by inserting its own genes into the DNA of the host human.  Those viral genes then produce proteins that causes damage. We study the  HIV-1 transgenic rat model. The HIV transgenic rat has been genetically engineered to have  only 7 of the 9 HIV genes  inserted into its DNA. By excluding two of the genes the rats are not infectious and therefore safe to work with, but the remaining seven genes are sufficient to produce the viral proteins. We study what impact these viral proteins have on the brain of the HIV-1 transgenic rat as well as how these proteins affect  the rat’s behavior and ability to learn.
