Adding a @shu.edu account to the Windows 8 Mail app [faculty / admin]

  1. From the Windows 8 Start screen, select the Mail tile
  2. Swipe from the right edge to display the Charms bar, select Settings
  3. Select Accounts
  4. Select Add an account
  5. Select the Exchange icon
  6. Enter your eMail address (first.last@shu.edu) and your PirateNet password, then select the See all link
  7. Enter the following information:
    Server Address: mail.shu.edu
    Domain:  shu
    Username: PirateNet shortname
    Select Connect
  8. Your email account will take a few minutes to synchronize.
    If this is the first time that you are connecting your @shu.edu email, you will see a prompt to accept remote administration – Select yes or ok
    Additionally, you may see a yellow bar at the top of the window – accept all prompts that appear

Adding a Sleep Tile to Windows Metro

Adding a tile to the Metro screen to pace the computer in Sleep Mode is an option that some individuals may find convenient.

  1. From the Windows 8 Desktop, right-click on an open area of the screen, then select New > Shortcut
  2. In the Location field, enter the following, then select Next
    rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0
  3. Enter Sleep in the name field, then select Finish
  4. The Sleep Shortcut will be added to your desktop
  5. Right-Click on the Sleep Shortcut, then select Properties
  6. On the Shortcut tab, select the Change Icon button
  7. The rundll32.exe file doesn’t have icons associated with in. Specifying an alternative file containing icons is suggested. Select the Browse… button
  8. Select the shell32.dll file
    (C:WindowsSystem32)
  9. Select an icon for the Sleep shortcut, then select OK
  10. The new icon will now appear on your Sleep shortcut
  11. Right-Click on the Sleep Shortcut, then select the Pin to Start option
  12. The Sleep Tile will now be displayed on your Metro screen
