Student Technology Semester Kickstart

The Department of Information Technology welcomes you back to campus! To help kickstart your year, we have gathered a list of important information we think you will find helpful.

The Technology webpage, http://www.shu.edu/technology/index.cfm, provides a wealth of “how to” articles, as well as answers to many frequently asked questions.

Additionally, the Technology Service Desk is available 24/7. They are your point of contact for any technology related questions or problems.

PC Support Services – Corrigan Hall – Lower Level, Room 29
Walk in hours: Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
The last appointment will be taken at 5:30 p.m.

Printing on Campus – Over 20 public print stations are available around campus. A map of public print stations can be found here. Full-time students receive 400 free pages per semester. Part-time students receive 200 free pages. Pirate Gold accounts will be charged 5 cents per page over your semester print limit.

Computer Labs – There are four public computer labs on campus, all staffed by Student Technology Assistants. Click here for locations.

Security – Keep your passwords secret, never provide your password over email or based on an email request, create strong passwords and change your password every 120 days. If you suspect phishing, identity theft, or hacking, please do not open the file and alert the Service Desk immediately.

Our Technology Blog (http://blogs.shu.edu/technology) is a fantastic resource for learning about the latest innovations and trends. Topics include information on workshops, events, news and announcements, as well as software launches and upgrades.

Connectivity

Be in the Know…on the Go! – Download the University’s mobile app, SHU mobile, to help find your classroom, reference the campus map, view Pirate News, track SHUFLY and much more. This app has so many features, it is hard to list them all! Blackboard Student allow you to access content anywhere, at any time, right from your mobile device. Check your grades, view announcements, access course content and more! Both available on Google Play and the App Store. Blackboard Student also available in the Windows Store.

Connecting devices in the Residence Halls – Gaming, blu-ray players and smart devices can connect to the ‘shurnet’ network. Unlike the ‘campus’ network, ‘shurnet’ is only accessible in the residence halls. The password can be found on the SHU Portal’s Technology page under “Frequently Used Services”. Cell phones, tablets and personal laptops/desktops, should utilize the ‘campus’ network.

Other services

Take Advantage of Space154! – Space154 is an informal environment for students and faculty to explore, create and innovate with 21st century tools and technology. Available by appointment or by attending open lab hours, which will be posted on our website shortly.

Wireless Displays – Wireless Displays are now available in all the classrooms. These displays provide students and faculty the ability to share, collaborate and present from their laptop, tablet or mobile device. No more dongles!
