What is Okta?

Okta is the tool used by the Department of Information Technology to enable single sign-on, allowing active members of the Seton Hall community to access various SHU accounts without being prompted to login multiple times. Okta is a third-party enterprise-grade, identity management service, built for the cloud, but compatible with many on-premises applications.

When you log in to PirateNet by clicking on the link available from any University webpage, the dashboard that appears includes “chiclets” that provide single sign-on access to Blackboard, PirateNet Services and the Office 365 suite of applications.

Okta requires browser plug-ins in order to display efficiently.  These plug-ins are available from each of the major browsers:

Periodically these plug-ins will need to be updated.

  • If you’ve already installed the plug-in for your browser, you’ll receive a message in Okta when you login.
  • Click on the prompts to update the plug-in.
  • The update takes effect immediately – no need to restart your computer.
