Faculty Tech Bytes

The Faculty Tech Bytes series is comprised of hands-on sessions, focusing on increasing your productivity.  Faculty Tech Bytes sessions run each Monday from 11am – 12 noon, Tuesday 12 noon – 1pm, and Thursday from 3pm – 4pm in the TLTC.  Stop by for 15 minutes, or stay for the entire session.

Blackboard: Getting Started
New to Blackboard? Looking for information on how to upload your Course Syllabus or print a course photo roster? This hands-on session will guide participants through the basics of Blackboard, and highlight some of the more advanced features.
September 1, 2015 – Tuesday 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Audience Response System: Top Hat
Top Hat (https://tophat.com) is an audience-response system designed to foster student engagement. Students respond to questions posted by the instructor via web browser, smartphone app, or text messaging (sms). This session will cover the basics of getting started with Top Hat.

Echo360 Personal Capture
This workshop will provide an introduction to the ECHO360 Personal Capture software. Record your audio, computer screen, and (optionally) your web camera to record a mini-lecture for students to review prior to class, record solving a complex problem in Excel, or record anything else on your computer screen for students to review.

DyKnow
DyKnow classroom management software facilitates content delivery and collaboration via DyKnow Vision and administrative tasks such as attendance and blocking non-curricular applications via DyKnow Monitor. Faculty members can either import a prepared PowerPoint file into a DyKnow session, or work from a series of blank panels. Students can annotate the presentation and save a copy for review.

3D Printing
3D Printing has arrived at Seton Hall! This session will introduce you to the resources available, including the MakerBot Replicator 3D Printer and free 3D design software (Sketchup, AutoCAD). Participants will have an opportunity to submit their 3D files for printing.

Blackboard Collaborate
Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing system, built directly into your Blackboard course! Faculty can create a virtual classroom or hold virtual office hours to meet with students. This session will cover starting a Blackboard Collaborate session, utilizing the built-in tools to foster engagement, and how to record your Collaborate sessions for future review.

Conducting Effective Webinars
This session will cover best practices for creating engaging and dynamic webinars, with specific suggestions, such as planning breaks for questions and activities, and controlling audio feedback (echoing) via the use of an external microphone and headphones.

Blackboard Safe Assign
SafeAssign is a tool within Blackboard that helps to prevent plagiarism by detecting unoriginal content in student papers. SafeAssign also creates opportunities to help inform students about the proper way to cite sources.

Blackboard Discussion Boards
Blackboard Discussion Boards allow for asynchronous communication between students and faculty. This session will cover how to create your Blackboard Discussion Boards by creating a discussion forums and threads. Additional features to be covered include the grading option, and the option to allow students to view the responses (threads) of their peers only after creating a response (thread) of their own.

Blackboard Inline Grading
During this session we will cover how faculty can utilize the Blackboard Inline Grading function to view, comment, and grade student submitted assignments within the Grade Center. This session will also cover how digital ink can be used to provide hand-written notes on student submitted assignments.

Blackboard Grade Center
This session will focus on how faculty can best utilize the power of the Blackboard Grade Center. Topics covered will include how to create categories, weighted columns, and total columns, and providing assignment feedback to students.

Citation Management

Skype for Business
Skype for Business is Microsoft’s messaging platform, capable of supporting real-time text based chat, video conferencing, and screen sharing. This session will cover how Skype for Business can be used for virtual office hours, bringing in external guest speakers, and more.

Open Educational Resources (OER)
Open Educational Resources (OER) can take many forms, including learning objects, videos, simulations, images, case studies, and more. This session will cover identifying, locating, and utilizing OER’s to create a rich learning experience in your face to face, online, or hybrid course.

Accessibility 101
Increase the accessibility of your course documents through the use of alt text, headings, and descriptions. During this session, participants will have an opportunity to work with existing Word and PowerPoint documents, adding elements to meet the needs of all learners.
